Subject: | Suspended Propeller Balance |
Crew, I thought I would take a moment to share how I balanced my propeller. Probably
not for everyone, but for your consideration:
I started as most due with using a shaft through the prop. hub and "rolling" the
assembly on a level surface to find the off balance. The first picture shows
the setup I made to perform this type of balance. I used a large piece of aluminum
channel and modified it to fit my camera tri-pod. The tri-pod itself has
bubble levels built in it, but I also used a couple other levels on the channel
itself. I won't go into any further detail here, but there are numerous
things that could be done to improve my set-up and had I continued down this path,
I would have made some changes. While starting to do the balance, I was not
entirely pleased with doing so in this fashion, so I proceeded to plan "B".
Plan "B" was to use a suspended balance like the off the shelf "Buzz Master". So,
I fabricated my own with some added features and ended up with the items shown
in the attached photos. There are a lot of factors to consider and variables
that need to be sorted out prior to fabrication, but that can be covered
at a later time.
The entire assembly is suspended from my drill press. The last few shots show
the added nuts/washers used to get the prop. in balance and how the string on
top and the bubble on the bottom confirm the prop. is now good both tip to tip
and across the hub.
All items...including the tapered hub...were marked and identified as to their
clocking and location, (which you may note in the "exploded view" picture) so
that final assembly on the engine would be done correctly and the balance would
be correct.
If God is your co-pilot...switch seats.

Subject: | Schimitar Origin |
Sorry... double pumped the enter button and my post was sent...
I was asked off line about the curve of my propeller. I had no answers, so here
is a snoppet I found on the web that be be interesting to some:
"A scimitar propeller is shaped like a scimitar sword, with increasing sweep along
the leading edge. Typically scimitar propellers are constructed of lightweight
or composite materials. In the early 1900s they were made of laminated wood.
The combination of light weight and efficient aerodynamics results in more
power and reduced noise."
"A method of decreasing wave drag was discovered by German researchers in WWII:
sweeping the wing backward. Today, almost all aircraft designed to fly much above
450 mph (700 km/h) use a swept wing. In the 1940s, NACA started researching
propellers with similar sweep. Since the inside of the prop is moving more
slowly than the outside, the blade becomes progressively more swept toward the
outside, leading to a curved shape similar to that of a scimitar."
If God is your co-pilot...switch seats.

Since the list is a little slow I thought I would let you all know about my recent
visit to the Frazier Lake Airport for a personal tour of Charlie Millers'
(the Pietenpol Ambassador of Morgan Hill CA) fabulous Pietenpol.
Frazier Lake Airport has been the host to the West Coast Piet gathering, and now
I know why - its a wonderfull place.
I have seen many beautiful Piets equal in craftsmanship but none better than Charles'
- It's outstanding in workmanship and detail. Some photos are available
on the west coast site here.

Check out the web site for Frazier lake airport (or is is a living museum of classic
aircraft?). There a a lot of classic airplanes including one in Charles
hanger next to his Piet - Beautiful! The first Saturday of each month is an
"antique aircraft display day" - If you are ever in the area of San Jose / Morgan
Hill CA pick a first Saturday to visit the airport and bring a camera.

The Piet gathering must be excellent event also. I just need to find an excuse
to be in SanJose or Morgan Hill for the next one!

Glad you got to meet up with Charlie! His build story is as nice as his Piet, and
you were definitely rubbing shoulders with The Best of the west coast bunch!

Charlie and his family are also the co-host with Mike Groah of the West Coast Piet
Flyin. His hangar is the official Piet gathering place and luncheon site.
Cheers to Charlie.
