      >From the picture the tool marks are not "dimples" nor are they " VG's".

I doubt that long longitudinal concave tooling marks from front to back on the
blade surface do anything to improve prop performance. In fact they may induce
more surface drag do to the fact that they are generating non-directed turbulent
boundary layers that have energy and are then dissipated into the air flow
causing boundary separation degrading blade performance.

If this was such a big performance improvement, then why have the top propeller
makes been using and designing this feature on all there propellers. Simple,
it has a negative effect with no performance gain.

With all do respect .... I think it is a little snake oil selling here.

If any of you hoarder types happen to have the Jan 2004 issue of Sport Aviation,
I would like to talk to you! Seems I gave a copy to my 90 yr old uncle only
to discover that it was my last one. So (pure vanity on my part), I would like
      a copy for myself.
Please help a recovering curmudgeon relive the glory days of his ancient past

You could very well be correct! Either way, I was buying a Cloud Car prop. and
either way, I was going to buy it in the rough and finish it myself, so I am
not sure what Jay would be gaining from selling me said snake oil. I would be
willing someday, to swap my propeller onto another Pietenpol using a smooth Cloud
Car prop. and do a direct side by side comparison. Could very well be a
bunch of hooey. However, if needed, a good sanding and re-finish would not be
all that big of a deal down the road.

thanks for all the great responses and pictures. makes it exciting to wait on the
thing to get here- not sure just what stain to use or even what wood they
are using o cut it from-should have asked earlier on. but when it gets here I'll
have a better idea of how to go with it now. Raymond

Jay uses different woods. I was asked what I would prefer...some customers like
to use different wood laminations for the variation in color. I went with all
maple. I am surprised he did not ask you for a wood preference.

Nah, I think Larry's just trying to get a copy for free, rather than be out
the nearly 8 dollars it would cost him to buy it from Ebay. And for that,
he's my hero of the week.

As a matter of fact I did wear mt birthday suit, under all the other clothing.
I don't fly in those temps anymore. That flight was back in the early 90's.
I have been known to still fly while the temps are in the 30's, but not very
      often.

      Stay warm out there.

How to tell if he's a REAL airline pilot... Ask him how much the USAToday costs.
The one and only correct answer is "I don't know". I think it's an unwritten
requirement for all layover hotels to have free newspapers.

I actually asked him what he might have that was most affordable- he had 2 props
cut sometime back stored way for Corvair engines. I wanted to stay with straight
blades and get a few more inches pitch than my 66X29. he had a 32 or 33 and
a 34 pitch. I think both as in the rough were about 72" long. he sold me one
worth the money and I will most likely cut it to around 68" long to start with.
maybe even 70" if it looks like it will clean up well there and balance out.
and can trim length if it proves to load it up too much a little at a time.
since I fly from a pretty short and very un-forgiving strip I don't want to get
too aggressive with pitch, but the one I have just gets me out really well
but immediately have to throttle back quite a ways to avoid over speeding and
I want to do little experimenting with a second one.
