That reminds me, Oscar - you don't have to buy that expensive compass fluid.
It is nothing more than lighter fluid, like the old Zippo lighters used.
Gulflite charcoal lighter fluid works just fine for much lower cost.

Thank you, Mikee, but this time I already knew how to do what needed to be
done. I assume that you posted this for the benefit of others who might not
know the correct procedure. A certain [UNCLASSIFIED] friend of mine comes
      to mind ;o)

And my thanks to Ben Charvet for pointing out to me that I can save the cost
of buying a brass screwdriver by taking an old key and
filing/grinding/shaping it into a screwdriver suitable for adjusting the
compensator screws on the instrument. A true Pietenpoler.

In preparation for conducting this precision operation, I bought a bottle of
Templeton Rye, should my whiskey compass require topping up.

Because of the unrest in the Middle East and Crimea, economic malaise, global warming
and the volatility of bitcoins, I am so overwrought that I have not been
able to discharge the duties of TC for several months. I think it is only fair
that I relinquish my post so that someone else can take over.

I stepped up to the position after Chris Eggsgard passed away and have proudly
carried on in his tradition ever since. He was a man who loved the beauty and
simplicity of Mr. Pietenpol's design and would tolerate no lookalikes. The very
mention of the name Grega or GN-1 would incur his wrath and it was frightening
to behold. I never heard him utter the phrase " There is no such thing as a
stupid question", believing that a certain amount of rational thinking was a
prerequisite to attempting the task of recreating the classic design.

Hopefully someone with a sharp pen and tongue as well as a penchant for keeping
the marque pure will step up to fill Chris's shoes. Touchy-feely political correctness
is not a prerequisite for this position!

Here's the hinges he just finished using 6061 aluminum. He built a mockup

Nice idea. I found a similar design that I will use from an old Newsletter.
1" and 3/4" 4130 square tubing. Cut one side off & the 3/4 nests inside t
he 1". Cut/drill/shape the necessary pieces. Connect with clevis pin. There
was a caution that at least one hinge half should be inset into the wood t
o prevent swiveling. I thought of using AL=2C but considered that it might
be too soft for control hinge durability.

      Gentlemen,

I am not sure any one man is quite capable of filling the distinguished and
eminent shoes, of the consummate and magnanimous Top Curmudgeon, Lawrence
      V. Williams. Not to mention that I had to look up the definition of acerbic
. Heck, I don't even have half the credentials behind my name either. The o
nly thing I do have going for me is the fact that I am in sole possession o
f the BHP "secret" papers. I will have to admit that these papers do contai
n a wealth of Bernerd's knowledge and, private, previously-unpublished pond
erings on many subjects. I was entrusted with these a few years ago by the
elusive and imponderable John (don't spell it Racine) Recine. Where he got
them I do not know. At any rate I was sworn to uphold the tradition of only
making these available once annually, during the month of May.

I would be honored to serve on a revue board, in equal capacity and authori
ty, with the other members, the qualifications for which are contained in t
he "papers". So as previously mentioned, we will have to wait a couple of m
onths for those to be revealed.

You mean all the way across Lake Winnebago from Oshkosh to the eastern shoreline?
      [Shocked]

You could only have topped that by flying across in your A65 powered Air Camper
on one of those days below -20 F.

(That oughta learn ya - If you had gone with the Model A and the original radiator
arrangement, you could have had a warm breeze on your face. [Laughing] )

I will. In that picture showing your tall, dark, and handsome scimitar prop

Always remember to go to other people's funerals.
Otherwise, they might not come to yours.

      Are these the mock-up ones?
If not they have to be fine filed smooth, all edges
rounded off, ALL scratches removed and then
      fine sanded to a polish.

Here's the hinges he just finished using 6061 aluminum. He built a
mockup first to make sure everything would fit.

Has anyone done them like this? Any see any potential issues?

        Thanks!
