Usually measured at the skirt, at the widest point (if they are cam ground, and if they're 283 pistons, I believe they are). .003 clearance doesn't sound too bad, haven't read up on model A's though. Race engines usually run more clearance because they run hotter. However, if the clearance is being read at the wrong point, you probably don't have clearance. I just can't remember if the widest point of the skirt is perpendicular to the wrist pin or the other way... easily googleable, often times shown in manuals possibly even with the piston set. Either way, the scoring says it all, you definitely need more. Hopefully you can hone out the damage to the walls, possibly reuse the pistons (worst case new ones aren't that much) and get her back together. I've corrected taper and out of round with a Lisle 15000 hone (easily avail on ebay) that you run with a drill all the way out to .010 over, so you could easily go from .003 to .005-7 with just the hone which will likely take out your scoring. If you don't have enough clearance, normal running temps will swell the piston and cause interference, so it wouldn't show in the water temperature. We do have modern pistons in a old ford block... and completely agree that 5 to 7 isn't too much. Many manuals don't recommend reboring until well over 8 thousanths oversize as long as the cylinder isn't tapered or out of round. One more thing to check is piston ring gap. Off the top of my head I'm thinking 20 thou is pretty normal. If the rings were causing excess friction, that could heat up the piston to where 3 thou clearance isn't enough. The easiest way to check is pull a ring, put it in the cylinder and then use a feeler gage on the gap. Doesn't seem likely, but worth checking. I imagine your engine shop will tell you this, but just to be sure, boring a few thousanths like that is extremely hard. Boring to within a thou is pretty easy, but only if you're taking 10 or more altogether... they'll most likely hone the cylinders to the size you want. You really can do this yourself, but you do need a decent bore gage. May not be worth getting the $150 hone and $100 bore gage, but otherwise the job really isn't that big of a deal. Wish you were nearby, would be a fun afternoon project. Hope this fixes the problem! My name is John Gillis and I've built and currently fly a Sonex Waiex. I'm onto my second airplane and decided on a Pietenpol after sitting in a friends. I purchased the plans and ordered the EAA books recommended by pietenpols.org. I know how to assemble a sheet metal plane and fabricate metal parts, but wood and fabric will be a new skill set for me. I have a couple of questions to start with. Are the kit bundles from Aircraft Spruce the best way to get started? Is shipping of the long spruce pieces expensive? Can you locally source any of the spruce or plywood in say Denver? I would like to put a Rotec R2800 on the nose, alternately an O235 or Corvair. What fuselage length do you choose? Thanks in advance and I apologize if this gets rehashed too often. I couldn't find any info on this using the search function or in the FAQ. In order to fix this condition, last fall I shimmed up the rear of the elevator a 1/4" and it did absolutely nothing. After reading some riblett posts I think I need to make the cabanes 11/16 different to get the same 2 deg angle of incedence, to match the fc10 airfoil. Before I tear it apart, I am going to have my test pilot fly with 50# worth of ballast with him, that would equal my 200# and see if I'm just on the front edge of the weight and balance. My trim don't work either. I was really hoping to be flying myself by this time, but I don't think it's gonna happen for awhile. On a positive note, the engine ran great! Just kidding. We had a great time and the weather was great. Only five planes this year for many different reasons but I think all were health related, aircraft and human. I didn't take any pics but I'm sure others did. Four piets flew to Los Banos for breakfast on Sunday morning then went our separate ways. I managed to log 9 hours in the air this weekend. Can't wait til next year. 363 more days to go. -------- Scott Liefeld Flying N11MS since March 1972 Steel Tube C-85-12 Wire Wheels Brodhead in 1996 Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=424595#424595 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other Matronics Email List Services ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Post A New Message pietenpol-list@matronics.com UN/SUBSCRIBE http://www.matronics.com/subscription List FAQ http://www.matronics.com/FAQ/Pietenpol-List.htm Web Forum Interface To Lists http://forums.matronics.com Matronics List Wiki http://wiki.matronics.com Full Archive Search Engine http://www.matronics.com/search 7-Day List Browse http://www.matronics.com/browse/pietenpol-list Browse Digests http://www.matronics.com/digest/pietenpol-list Browse Other Lists http://www.matronics.com/browse Live Online Chat! http://www.matronics.com/chat Archive Downloading http://www.matronics.com/archives Photo Share http://www.matronics.com/photoshare Other Email Lists http://www.matronics.com/emaillists Contributions http://www.matronics.com/contribution ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- These Email List Services are sponsored solely by Matronics and through the generous Contributions of its members.
