Years ago, after getting tailwheel endorsement, flying a 1952 C-170B out of
Dulles, yes Washington Dulles International, a friend offered a flight in
his Corben Baby Ace. Since a single-place, I was hesitant. Also, l thought,
why would anyone want that. You can't really travel in it. I flew it, and
immediately understood. That flight a part of the reason I have a Pietenpol
      now.

The tail not too bad but the fuselage gets covered and the struts are
      just dripping with oil.
I'm going to try to reduce the amount of oil I'm putting into the
exhaust too see if that helps.

      Dear Pietenpol Enthusiasts

My name is Erik This is my second post but i read the forum daily .
I have a Pietenpol Project started (wing rib jig) , engine and instruments gathered
      .......A long slow process !!!!

We have a 1964 65 hp Aeronca7acman Champ that I fly until my Pete is finished.
I have worked in the Air Show business for 30 odd years .....
Has anyone considered the long term efforts of smoke oil on fabric ?

I have seen many a good Air Show airplane be recovered earlier than expected ......seems
the smoke oil does funny things to the fabric/dope .

Some guys go so far as to degrease their airplane's after each performance.
      Something to consider.
      Just my thoughts. ........
      Cheers
      Erik

Mike and anyone else interested, the Waynesville (red stewart field) annual
Labor Day air show and fly-in will be August 30 and 31. There is an airshow
on the afternoon f the 30th and one that evening, but we can fly in earlier
that day. The 31st is the "taildragger" fly-in with a pancake breakfast.

Since there's so many piets in the surrounding areas, it would be really fun
if we could get a bunch up there.

      Here's the link again

      http://www.stewartsaircraft.net/airshow-2014.html

      the field's website is www.stewartsaircraft.net

Mike D, my airfield designator is k62. Gene Snyder near Falmouth KY. It's
about 45 minutes south of Waynesville, though you're gonna have to land on
      asphalt.

As for the content of the thread, I'm interested in it, not because I want to redesign
anything or prove that BHP was a genius but because it's an interesting
intellectual exercise. I enjoy learning about new and different subjects that
have relevance to aviation whether it's Pietenpol specific or not.

There are some on this list who see no value in it and they are entitled to their

      For me:

      1. I'm a woodworker, and it's a wood airplane
      2. Not expensive in the "normal ways", instruments, complicated wheels/brakes,
      big pricey motor, etc
      3. While people complain, the plans are pretty complete. MUCH more so than a
bunch of others I scrutinized carefully. You DON'T need to be an aeronautical
      engineer to build it.

There are several things about the Pietenpol that set it apart.

      1. It has a fascinating history.

      2. It's built out of readily available materials.

      3. It's got an open cockpit and tandem seat.

      4. There are a number of reasonable engine choices.

      5. The Pietenpol community is beyond compare for support and general overall "niceness".
      Civil discourse is the norm.

      6. You can paint "NX1234" in huge letters on the wings just like Lindbergh.

Jesus Christ...no one has "condemned" anyone, nor suggested they leave the thread,
or take it offline, or anything else.

I TRIED to encourage someone to pick a reasonable max gross weight and move on
with building. The whole, never-ending stress analysis is interesting but not
particularly helpful for choosing a max gross unless you are going to continue
the exercise for the entire aircraft. The strut fittings or wing attach bolts
are likely to fail long before reaching a limit for the spars themselves which
were being discussed. All of those getting on a high horse and "defending" the
others' rights to keep posting need to step back and look at what was actually
being said, and what was not being said.

You are right, if I don't want to hear it I don't have to read. The stress analysis
was interesting, the hysteria is not. I've unsubscribed before for over a
year, I guess I should have stayed there. Like Gallagher said "why can't the
TV have more intelligent programming? I keep turning up the brightness but it
      doesn't help!"

I'll SHUT UP and unsubscribe, again.

      Hi,

I'm getting ready to order the materials for the control system and I'm wondering
      about control pulleys...

Which ones are you guys using?

Aircraft spruce has some phenolic or poly ones.

      Is there a better source?

      Thanks,

      1. It is LSA compliant for those of us pentagenarians and older who may get tired
of arguing with the FAA over physicals.

      2. I have shown Pietenpol pictures to probably 200 co-pilots I have flown with
and the first word out of the mouths is virtually the same with all of them-

      COOL!!

Well now that I have officially joined this site and can break in I would like
to lighten the mood a bit at this time to say thank you to everyone that worked
very hard to make our first trip to a broadhead pietenpol and hatz fly in the
most enjoyable that I have ever attended. I was very impressed how the meals
were well organized, pleasantly servered and most importantly delicious! I had
never heard of a fish boil but now you have me hooked,no pun intended. The
only trash I seen was a napkin blowing across the taxiway on Friday when we had
above 15mph gust so thank you to the crews collecting all the trash I have never
      been to a cleaner event.

A couple years ago my dad said he wanted to build an airplane and with me currently
a student pilot at 39 and him at 60ish and had his pilots license at 16
I was very excited. I had never even thought of building an airplane and maybe
a even a little hesitant. As of now he has built his verticle and horizontal
stabilizer and wing ribs and has the lumber for the fuselage. So you can imagine
the questions we had for everyone we met and who could give advice or answers
to us so I would like to say thank you everyone we had a chance to meet
over the 4 days we were there. I would like to give a added huge thank you to
Tools for my first pietenpol flight and reassuring me that these aircraft are
an absolute pleasure to fly. That weekend has really inspired me and has given
me that spark I needed to keep flying because.......
I don't want fly. I have to fly.

      Sincerely,John

It cost me over a thousand dollars and a bunch of nights on the ground to get my
      Piet to brodhead.

There's only ONE reason I did it...

To give someone a ride that NEEDS one!

I did that a BUNCH of times over. Priceless! And I still have to fly it back
south... and probably north again next summer. PRICELESS!

Probably do it again next year. For the SAME reason. I had the BEST time EVER!!

      John,

Welcome. There are at least one or two builders that have built their aircraft
and did not fly until the latter part of the build so you are in good company.

I wish you and your dad the best as you build.

| Subject: | Help us Noobs out |

For me, the main attraction was that I used to own a Piper J-3 Cub, until my
practice wife came home one day and opened a bill for hangar rent and gave
me an ultimatum: "Either the airplane goes, or I go". Foolishly, I sold
the airplane (I should have just divorced her on the spot and saved myself
      12 years of misery).

Anyway, as the marriage was ending I realized I really missed that Cub, but
by then Cub prices were out of sight and I couldn't afford one (still
can't). I had flown a Pietenpol years before (actually it was a GN-1) and
found it to fly very much like a Cub, so when I decided to build a plane, it
      was a natural choice.

I also was attracted to a wooden airplane since I didn't know how to weld.
I quickly found there are an awful lot of welded parts on this airplane, so
I bought an oxy-acetylene rig and had a good welder come and give me some
instruction. By the time I was done, I was a fair welder and am pleased
with the welds on my plane (although the aileron horns, which were the first
parts I welded, look pretty rough).

If you want something with really good performance, build an RV or a Zenith.
However, if you want an airplane that will turn heads on the ramp, and fly
like a good honest airplane, build a Pietenpol.

What was the deciding factor in choosing the Piet?

This may help a few others take the plunge...

I have always loved planes and love low and slow flying. An old buddy and I
have put in many an flight in his 1947 Aeronca Champ. I had looked at Piets
in magazines and thought them pretty classic.

Then that @#$%^$%, @$%$#, )(f*^%))!!!!!, Oscar Zuniga, took me up in Scout,
Despite not having a headset (he did ask) I had a blast. After that I was
hooked and was trying to convince the wife to let me get one. Then that
$@$%$^@#, John Kuhfahl offered me first shot at a plane he had done a lot
of work on. It was 90% complete! "Steve, All you need to do is assemble
      it!"

Well, I hope to fly it before the end of September, Well over a year later.
      I can hardly wait.

| Subject: | Mounting a Venturi |

While I am not going to put a needle and ball or turn and bank or any other
gyro on the plane, I thought this might be of interest for those who might
      want to.

Old Bod, is an old aviator, VERY well respected, and VERY experienced,
(Stearman owner and flew Airliners from DC3 to the 747.

He has a venturi mounted in the exhaust stream. He has had it that way for
years. Here is what he says in response to a question about it:

"Have not had any ice or fouling problem with a venturi mounted in the
      exhaust stream.

If you will note, that is the way venturi's tended to be mounted on the
aircraft of the thirties. Mounting them on the side of the fuselage, as was
done by Cessna and North American in the late forties and early fifties,
was dumb! I once asked a Cessna salesman why they had the venturi's so
mounted on the 172 and he said it was to keep that tiny slot clean. Seems
he and some of the modern Cessna folks did not realize that the air comes
out of the tiny slot and not in!

While I imagine it is possible to foul a venturi with ice, I have not
experienced that yet and have had a fair amount of ice on this airframe and
many older airplanes I have owned which were so equipped over the years.
Have been very pleased with the performance of my nice little brass venturi
mounted in the exhaust stream. No corrosion problems and no failures at
all. Those guys back in the thirties really DID know what they were doing!

      Happy Skies,

      Old Bob"

I am sure someone will get mad because this idea is not on the Flying and
      Glider plans! ;+}
