Yes, Bill Church is correct, no need for normalizing under 1/8 in, according to
the Lincoln welding instructor (and his published pamphlets) at an EAA Sport-Air
TIG welding Workshop that I attended a number of years ago. All of my steel
in the Piet is TIGed. Hasn't cracked or broken.

<billspiet@sympatico.ca>
While it is true that 4130 structures that have been
TIG welded should be normalized after welding, there is one caveat that is
important to those building aircraft. The need for post weld normalizing really
only applies to 4130 thicknesses of 1/8" or more, or if 4130 filler rod has been
used. There isn't any metal on a Pietenpol fuselage that is 1/8" thick (or
more), so normalizing will not be required. Use either ER70S-2 or ER80S-D2
filler rods, and make sure that the metal is room temperature or warmer. It is
ESSENTIAL that the welds be allowed to cool slowly, in still air.
MIG welding
of 4130 tubing requires very specific processes, performed by skilled operators.
Best left to the professionals.
While the equipment costs of TIG are
considerably higher than Gas, the learning curve is much shorter for TIG.
Shorter learning curve = lower levels of frustration = higher likelihood of
success.

We use tig welding in all our aircraft parts. Even some that go over 400 mph

Tom,
I am going to say this with courtesy. I am sure that your experience has
validated what you have heard or seen of been lead to believe, but I don't
want anyone on the list considering Tig welding to be discouraged in any way
by your comments about "Can/will" crack, because I have personally Tig
welded parts that have flown on several hundred planes, and I am going to
say this in the nices way possible, my experience is that you are 100%
wrong.
Has anyone ever heard of a plage of weld cracking on 8,000 fly RV series
aircraft? They are 100% Tig welded. Are there AD's againd all the certified
Pitt's welds? No, because they are Tig welded, and they don't crack.
Likewise for Mig welded Maules and so on. I have been to many, many light
aircraft factories, and everyone uses Tig these days, and they don't post
treat the welds. Look at the link to my welding stories, and See that my
side kick Vern welded aircraft for the USN at the Jacksonville NADEP for 20
years, and it was all Tig, and nothing was post treated.
I like old stuff, and I can gas weld very well, and I taught the subject in
Embry-Riddle's A&P department. But that doesn't mean that Tig welding
doesn't work better, period. Spreading myths about cracking is only
discouraging new people from learning a very good skill, and knowing how to
use a great tool.
I welded Terry Hand's Piet landing gear legs today.....With a tig welder. I
didn't post treat it. According to your theory, I have done something
unairworthy and I am endangering him. I disagree. I also welded the last 300
motors mounts I made the same way. If Tig welds crack as you believe,
clearly I am making a big mistake. But my 26 years of welding aircraft parts
says I am not, the industry says I am not, and the USN says I am not.
Discouraging people from learning a skill because of an old wives tale isn't
supporting the concept of "Learn build and fly" particualry if that skill is
the proven industry dominant method. -ww.

AXLE, The email below was sent to me from my EAA chapter. The guy is going
with a crank snapping corvair. See below if you want to answer him.
ALSO I should have my Piet together in a month to 6 weeks. I would like you
to come down and look it over before I start trying to fly the thing. let
me know if that works for you.

Ulf,
Leo Amaya here from Six Mile, Tx (just N of KPKV/Port Lavaca). I'm building
a Polliwagen and going through an internet search, I became aware that
William Wynne did a Corvair College session with your Chapter.
History: I had planned to hang a Subie EJ22 on the nose of the PW but too
much R&D, overall weight and PSRU concerns to use this powerplant in a
plane.
I then did some research and went after a Corvair engine that I picked up
yesterday in Pasadena, Tx. Known weakness is the crank twisting/failing
due to bending loads but it's minimized is William Wynne's 5th bearning is
used.
Q1: Does anyone in your Chapter know "how to" tear down a Corvair?
Q2: I'm no gearhead but I can learn. I just need someone to show me to
tear it down to ensure I do not cause any damage or create additional
problems down the road. If nobody is knowledgeable in the Chapter ....can
you forward their contact info?
Thanks,
Leo Amaya :)

I will be at Sun N Fun this year.
I'm presenting a forum on Tuesday at noon in classroom 11, on "Painting Hom

This will be my first trip to the event so I pretty excited. I will be flyi
ng down from PA with a friend in his Aerotrek and helping out at the Aerotr
ek display. I'll try to get around to find you guys and say hi.

Steven,
I am assuming that you perhaps meant to send that to Kevin directly? Although Kevin
puts notes here on occasion, he no longer reads the list frequently, so posting
stuff publicly here will not put anyone in contact with him, unless he
reads it by chance.
While it may be fun to use phrases like "Crank snapping corvair", keep in mind
that the internet is forever, and search engines years from now will turn up that
comment out of context, to some guy looking to learn more about planes and
engines. It is a free world, say whatever you like, but it isn't promoting homebuilding.
