Malcolm, I hope to be at your forum if I can leave the wood shop for an hour that
early in the show. Anyway hope you can make it by our shop sometime during
      the show.

Thanks for all you do for Latex paint on aircraft. I work in the Sun n Fun museum
restoration workshop before the show and we have started using latex for some
      aircraft parts.

      Oscar,

It was about 20hrs machining and figuring out the process. I made 11 total, one
from scrap 6061 as proof of concept, and 10 out of 2024T3 aluminum. I was planning
on using the best 9 out of the bunch and have a spare if they all turned
out good. They are way over built and weigh somewhere around 6oz. Undecided if
i am going to use them.

      Hi Dave,

I just got done looking at your blog spot. I don't know what you are using to
clean your engine parts. Last year I tried using Pine Sol (full Strength and
it can go down the drain) as a carburetor cleaner. I worked really good and is
is cheap if bought in the lager containers. Just be sure to wear rubber glove
when you put your hands in it. I am thinking that it will work good for cleaning
all the engine parts. The Carbs turned out nicely. I let them soak overnight.

Has anyone else tried this besides me?

I used an engine cleaning gun with soap and water to hose off the heavy stuff.
It was coated in oil, caked in dirt, with aerokroil, wd40, AV30 from disassembly. Then
soaked it in stoddard solvents, and wire brushed them. Finished with a
mini dremel with brush attachments and q-tips for the nooks and crannies. I will
eventually be doing this again when i find another core to disassembly for
      parts.

Hi Charles, and thanks for the compliments.

I do poke around here from time to time, but made a decision a couple of years
ago that it was more productive to build rather than talk about it. I find this
particular medium to be extremely beneficial, especially to a new builder who
is willing to search for answers... aside from that it is a good place to argue
about a lot of things that just don't matter. Lots of rude comments and
hurt feelings around here recently. Oh, not mine... my skin is thicker than most,
but I just don't find much of it to be of use to my personal goals. I have
friends here, so I'm not pointing fingers at anyone in particular, just my
observation of the nature and tone. There is a FB Pietenpol group that shares
pics, status updates and general "motivational" posts that doesn't go into all
the ridiculous back and forth that commonly occurs here. That's more my style
at this point, not to mention that it is much more user friendly than the mailing
      list format.

Anyhow, I popped in here while I was eating my lunch... not sure when I'll be back
through. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions, but be aware that
my ship is not flying yet. Oh, she'll fly, but I've tested nothing except for
running the engine at this point.

Dave; your hinges are beautiful, as I said. I am very curious to know the weight
of that assembly with the two hinge halves and the AN3 bolt/nut that was in
your original photo. I'll put together two halves of the cast hinges that I
have, which go together with a clevis pin, and weigh my assembly. Mine use a
thin washer and a cotter pin, so let's leave those out since both our assemblies
      require them.

By the way, your Corvair cases look really nice as well. After disassembling my
core and scraping off most of the heavy crud, then softening the rest with ordinary
cleaners and hosing off, I took the case halves to an engine rebuilding
shop and had them dip the cases in their cleaning tank. You can see what I
      ended up with here:

Okay, Kevin thanks to you (and Shelley too) for your guidance and encouragement
on my build. I plan on including several features you have included in FBG and
will have more questions when the time comes. I had confirmed through other
sources that my 'bribe' had arrived but apparently it was not enough, I will try
      harder next time. :)

Seriously, thanks for being willing to answer questions, and for hosting colleges
that benefit all who attend them, I know it's a ton of work. Good to here the
      rebuild is coming along.
