Well then pass me another hot dog, I'll put on plenty of chili and goosh on a lot
of hot mustard and see if we can't get some good food stains going on that
carpet. Maybe a little trail of ants, too (no shop should be without them)...

I have three mechanical mentors. One's shop is like an episode of hoarders.
The seconds is like an operating room. They often collaborate. The third is
in the middle.
I myself am in the middle. As i do a project the shop gets cluttered. When
done all gets put up and i start over.
I am still in the middle of getting a good distro of tools. half at the
hangar, half at the house/garage and half of in my old suburban. Of course,
the right tool is always at the other place.
Blue Skies,
Steve D.

I'm with oscar, waaaay to neat. Read, I'm basically unable to do that!
Seriously, bravo! More importantly, some very practical suggestions adaptable
to any shop situation.
If I were to add anything it would be my idea on how to organize hardware. I'm
not a fan of typical plastic bin organizers, too inefficient. I, by happenstance,
bought a weird cabinet YEARS ago that had about 36 drawers that are about
2 ft sq and 3 inches deep.
Works way better than I anticipated it would. I had an entire neighborhood buying
the same diaper wipes, laundry detergent, dis washing detergent and using
frozen concentrate for all juices.
These all, properly cut, fit the cabinet perfectly and (with a dozen ice cube trays)
yielded me a thousand or more bins to hold everything from 0-80 to 1" x
10" bolts, nuts, washers, rivets, pins, you name it.
I only sort stuff until the pile is small enough to look through quickly. I have
one bin for 7/16 bolts, but about 40 for quarter twenties.
My shop is a mess but I can find a piece of hardware about immediately. Like jake's
screwdrivers, if I have a quarter inch bolt, it's in that one drawer.
With large flat drawers, easy to browse. I keep one as a return. When I clean,
I throw all my stuff in it, when it gets kinda full, I sort and distribute back
into itself.
I like the concept enough I'm building one for my shop in wisconsin.
I'm halfway done making the required twenty eight drawers!

Subject: | Andy flies from the rear pit of the Piet |
A friend and colleague flew the Piet from the rear cockpit for the first time yesterday.
Here's the entire flight. WARNING! No editing at all. Only for those
who are bored and hardcore Piet. Raw video; no time to edit yet. Entire flight
in 5 videos. Some may take time to load; all are in 1080p but you may have
to manually set the HD resolution using the little cog emblem in the lower right
corner of the frame. The second video starts the actual flying.

I don't know how the rest of you feel, but I admire the act of trusting someone
so much that you would turn over controls of your baby to another person. This
not to say that I would fall into that same pile for asking Kevin Purtee to
fly mine. That was easy as Kevin is 10 times the pilot I will ever be, and certainly
well qualified to fly a Corvair Piet. I can readily think of another 1/2
dozen or more who would be equally welcomed. Jeff, I am glad you posted that,
though I'll admit that I only watched the take off and landing. I also have
to admit that I would prefer to stay on the ground...but that's me.
Similarly, what a great feeling to be offered the controls. Dan Yocum offered me
a glimpse of that in 2012 at Brodhead when he dangled the carrot, and I bit.
I had a fair amount of tailwheel time, but hadn't flown in nearly 30 years! The
feeling was amazing...
...but what about when that nasty little thing happens? The one thing any of us
would dread in our own planes, let alone someone else's? It happened to me when
I was 18, and it happened to my 15,000 hr test pilot/flight instructor who
drug a wingtip on my Piet while doing a downwind takeoff with a passenger. He
was mortified about damaging my pride & joy, just as I was 43 years ago. A local
Baby Ace owner has been insisting that I fly his Ace, but that memory still
haunts...my flight instructor hasn't flown my Piet, though he has carte blanc
and a key to my hanger, since that happened to him 2 years ago (aside from my
BFR where he rode in front.
So, what's my point? I don't think I have one...just some musings, brought on by
Jeff's generosity to a friend.
