Subject: | How to attach the lower/undercamber fabric? |
For the fabric on the wing bottom of the wing......I'm thinking about doing this
last wing by painting some adhesive (Stewart Systems) onto the under cambered
area of the rib, then lay anti chafe tape over than while it's tacky, then paint
on another coat of adhesive. Then lay the fabric on top of that and lay
on more adhesive and wipe.
I wonder if anti chafe tape is even necessary where the fabric will be glued to
the rib??? Seems like anti chafe tape is better where there's not adhesive and
the fabric is not attached to the surface.
All that BEFORE any shrinking. I did the first wing panel differently and it was
a pain.
Is that anywhere near how you did it?
Thanks!

I did not attach to the under camber...or any other part of the ribs, just let
the stitching pull it in; however, I'm recovering a Baby Ace where the former
owner did attach fabric to the ribs with Eco-Bond. It's a bit of a pain getting
that old fabric off as, I'm not careful, it continually wants to pull wood with
it. Just sayin'....

Jim, no need for the glue. The rib stitching will pull the fabric tight
against the rib. Ken

+ 3 for gluing not necessary. Poly fiber basically has you shrinking to 250, stitching,
then final shrinking for under camber. This is what we did on the standard
j-1, which is much more heavily under cambered and it worked great.

I think with all those Couandas pushing up on the bottom, it should not
need glueing on the bottom. The rib lacing will help hold the top cloth on
when the Bernoullis are lifting on that surface.
I don't recall the Stewart system manual requiring glue on any ribs. But I
don't think it would hurt.

I used the Steward glue and attached the fabric to both the top and bottom with
no antichafe. Just made sure the ribs were sanded smooth. As wide as the Pietenpol
ribs are the rib stitching is probably redundant, but it doesn't weigh much
and redundant is good aviation

The online videos are a godsend. You can watch an expert show you how. I
watched them several times.

Incidentally I used a harbor freight non contact or thermometer to
calibrate my iron.
I also used it to check the temp on some complex areas where I used a heat
gun.

Subject: | Heat gun on ceconite |
After seeing a guy on YouTube use a heat gun to snug the cloth on a cub
fuselage, I asked the list and was told emphatically not to use a heat gun.
The result? I experimented with the heat gun and found the following;
1. An iron is best for tacking the ekobond glue and shrinking the big open
areas. The big curves are best dome with an iron.
2. The heat gun will shrink fabric over nuts, bolts and around hinges. But
you have to be careful. It can burn a hole in a heartbeat. Using the IR
thermometer measuring the temp on the cloth helps control temp. Also you
will find the limit on how much the Dacron will shrink.
I was glad the list waived me off of Ruining a lot of fabric with a heat
gun. But In the tradition of EAA I experimented and found where it is
effective.
Blue skies
