I searched thru the previous posts and learned a lot. My question is: can anyone help with wood strut cross sections and material? The reason is twofold: 1. Streamlined seamless 4130 (or anything else) is not available in Tr. Shipping from States is more expensive than the material itself (length issue). 2. I like working with wood an wood struts look really cool, at least to my eyes. Mr. Gary Boothe's Corvair Piet has what I am after. Does NX380MB have deeper fuselage by the way? Semih, I believe WACO Aircraft trusts in the strength of the epoxy. The epoxy itself is stronger than the wood. This Aircraft is a classic design that dates from the 1930s. It is still being produced. It is strong and fully aerobatic. I do not know of any structural failures. Home builders are well known for often building to a much higher standard than production facilities. Blue skies, Steve D. Semih, I just realized I did not answer your question. Build it safe! How picky you are, is your decision. I had to decide that good enough has to be good enough for me. If I hold out for perfect I will never get my plane built. But that is because I do not have the skills you have available. Many planes that go to Oshkosh show super high levels of craftsmanship. Pietenpols here vary from pretty rough but airworthy and good flying to pristine workmanship that are prize-winning Aircraft. Blue skies, Steve D. Semih, You and your project are an inspiration! The attached pictures will show the orientation of the laminations on my struts. These are laminated hickory, but I don't think you would be narrowed to just hickory. I used T-88 epoxy on these, but have also used Weldwood Resorcinol on other strut sets. Jim Markle has a different approach to his beautiful struts, and maybe he can chime in. Please feel free to ask questions anytime, either on this list, or in personal email. Gary They are fantastic! I only saw them in larger photos and they have not done enough justice. Looking closely... Do you have any details of cross section, bolt sizes, hole spacings? My other question was: is your fuselage deeper than original? You seem to sit lower. Thank you very much for your kind and informative response. Samih, Yes, I'm sorry, I forgot to answer your other question. I appear to sit lower because I raised the turtledecks 1 1/2". I also have two stringers on the bottom, which gives the appearance of a deeper fuselage. The strut brackets are held on with three 3/16" bolts. I have no recollection of the spacing...probably about 2". I'm not sure what you mean by "cross section" details, but, when you rip the laminations, you are free to do so in a way that you create vertical grain in each piece. I oriented them so that the grain was vertical when gluing. Hope that helps.... Gary raising the turtledecks is a great idea. I'll do the same. It looks cool too. By cross section, I meant width and depth of the struts. Thank you again, Semih Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=441640#441640
