I've been to Oshkosh a few times, but not this year. Thanks for the tip. We hope
      to get there on Friday.

      Hey mike,

I agree with bill's comments as food for thought. I don't know how much tail wheel
time you have. I basically learned on a Piet. I don't care what folks say,
it isn't the easiest tail dragger around...

As such, those early days are still fresh in my memory! I don't think gusty conditions
cause the most forces on that rudder bar, but rather a newbie. My instructor
asked if I was nervous... No. I think you are, relax your legs. I'm
not tensed was my reply. Then the rudder is stuck because I can't move it!

I then realized I was pushing with both legs pretty damn hard! Don't think it's
the first time he'd saw that. Air forces aren't anything compared to that,
you likely will be putting more force on that bar than you may realize.

I really don't think the original design is lacking in any respect except I'd through
bolt without welding given jack's incident.

| Subject: | Re: Rudder Bar Mods |

Guess I could have been a little more clear.
My reference to the gusty crosswinds wasn't intended to imply that the aerodynamic
loads caused by the crosswinds would result in heavy rudder bar forces, but
rather, that the rapidly changing conditions would require the pilot's feet
to be dancing on the rudder bar, and pretty much any pilot likely would end up
applying foot pressure to both sides simultaneously.
Likewise, any time the pilot has used up all the rudder travel, but still doesn't
seem to be enough, human nature will be to push harder (even though there isn't
anywhere more to go.) Just like the way most people will apply even more
pressure to a car's brake pedal, even when the tires are skidding, yet the car
isn't stopping fast enough - the extra pressure on the pedal doesn't do any
good at all (since the wheels are locked), but it's still hard to resist doing
      it.
The short answer is that the rudder bar will end up being stressed quite a bit
more than is actually necessary to operate the plane. Hard to avoid.

      Bill C.

I wouldn't stay there either. there are no planes, no hangars and no runway.
Where are all the pilots? Although there looks like enough room for a tent or

I need to make my fuselage wider by 2 inches. I need to do this at the pilot shoulders
location in the seat area. I need to go from the plans dimension of 22
inches to a total of 24 inches. Has anyone made their fuselage wider?

      Hi tony51
I'm building a biplane variant of the pietenpol called an Aerial. My fuse
is 30" wide outside to outside.
It will be powered by a 120hp WW Corvair conversion. I went with a wider fuse
because my sister really wants to ride. Being a rounder than standard lady,
she will fit better in first class, especially considering that my feet would
be massaging her ass in a narrower front pit!(gimme a break. She's my sis, ok?)
Anyway, the extra elbow room is really nice for the pilot as well. Everything
else in the fuse(long model) is as per plans.
                              Enjoy. Glen
