Semih,
Nice hinges, though I do not know enough about metallurgy to comment on them
being SS.

I made mine an inch wider. If I build another I will do it to the plans.
Before committing to this path try to find a Pietenpol built to the plans
and sit in it. Or, build a mockpit (a mock-up cockpit) and try it on for
size. I'm 6'2" and close to 200 lbs and I found I fit just fine in a
standard sized cockpit. Widening it can be done, but that one change
ripples through the design, adding weight, complexity, and cost.

If I was doing it, that is what I would do. Start the taper behind the rear
seat and keep the changes to a minimum. If you widen the fuselage at the
front you will need another sheet of plywood, you will also have to change
the wing center section width, redesign the upper wing attachment points and
then the wing strut angle will be off so you will have to change the lower
and upper fittings......also adds more weight.
I know other people have suggested doing this in the past. I just don't
know who and if it was done.

I need some assistance with this. Will it be okay to go from firewall back
to seat with a dimension of 24 inches. Then start my taper back to the tail.

I'm not saying this is the way to build your Pietenpol, but I agree with
Jack P. about building a cockpit mockup. This is the first thing we did when
we started on the Big Piet Project. This is the first newsletter article I
wrote back in 2002

Hi Gary
ss is stainless steel. It is an alooy of iron, chromium and nickel. The variety
I use is much stronger than mild steel, as used in the early Piets and slightly
weaker than 4130, which is an alloy of iron, chromium and molybdenum. AISI
304 is very TIG weldable too. We use about 2000 tons of it per year for our manufacturing.
Happy landings

I'd say 2000 tons is too heavy. :)
I made the same style of hinges, also using T304 stainless steel. I'll have to
weigh an assembly to see how much mine weigh.

Bill
2000 tons have nothing to do with flying stuff. It is just to explain the
material is readily available to me. Yes, we use about 7-10 tons per day.
The hinges are laser cut from 2mm (0.08")=8B thick material. When ass
embled,
they show almost no sideplay. Personally, I did not like the idea of 3
eyebolts. I also made more stuff using ss and laser cutting (yes, we have
our own CNC laser). They are quite different from 1932 fittings. My rudder
pedals are different too. they are all pedals, no rudder bar, with
Castamide bearings. Do you have any photos of your hinges?
Happy landings

Semih,
Attached is a photo of my hinge assembly. As you can see, the weight is 24 grams
(or about 0.9 ounces), according to my cheap digital scale. Mine are made
from 16ga (.058") AISI 304 stainless steel, and I polished them up using a buffing
wheel and some polishing compound.
I have also made a few other fittings from stainless steel, including my control
horns. I used the same basic design from the 1932 plans (airfoil shape from
light gauge sheet metal) but I had the blanks punched out using a CNC punch press
(+/- .004" accuracy). Very happy with the results, with the added benefit
of corrosion resistance offered by the stainless steel.
Bill C.

Tank you very much for your response. I think I was inspired by your hinge design.
The only thing is I overbuilt. I have a handicap of 144 grams (5 ounces).
If I need weight saving on the tail in the future, I will certainly build new
hinges.
Did you weigh other stuff? if so, I would very much like to compare figures.
My idea of control horns was different. I am posting the photo of the last elevator
horn.
