HI got my ticket in a 150 at local flying schools while I was building. When
I finished, I went for my tailwheel endorsement in a cub to both get my
flying skills current and get the tailwheel thing down (kinda) Then went
straight to the Piet (on grass for the first month) and it went pretty well.

Subject: | Re: private pilot |
Here is a brief overview of my pilot training experience with the various f
acilities available to me. (Northern Ohio)=C2-
My initial thought was to jump right into training in a tail wheel aircraft
and knock out the private certificate and tail wheel endorsement at once.
So, my first 15 hours of dual instruction was done in a C-120. That instruc
tor did not work out, so I moved to instructor #2. He was not a tail wheel
instructor and after having some good conversations with him, I decided to
move over to aircraft #2, a C-150 for the rest of my training. Shortly afte
r making the switch, another student wrecked the -120, so now there is no m
ore tail wheel training at that facility. I was finally able to solo in the
-150 last July just prior to Instructor #2 advising me that he will be mov
ing to Florida. Be advised that all of the above training was done at a non
-controlled field.
Turns out, I find a CFI here at work, however, he teaches out of yet anothe
r facility, in controlled air space...in another type aircraft. (DA-20C) I
am now on my 3rd CFI, third type aircraft and second training facility. I a
m learning this new aircraft along with all the nuances of being in control
led airspace. I hope to solo, again, this summer. I have about 35 hrs. tota
l of log book flight hours as of today. My training type aircraft are movin
g further and further away from the likeliness of the Pietenpol, but I hope
to regain that basic tail wheel skill once I get into my tail wheel endors
ement training...again...in probably another type aircraft...at facility #3
with instructor #4...
It has been a long and sometimes frustrating endeavor so far, but eventuall
y, I'll get there.

I admire your drive to stick with it. I've worked in the flight training env
ironment for many years and feel your frustrations. This may help: it is fa
r better to become a pilot under the tutelage of many instructors rather tha
n one. Each brings a different perspective to the craft and you'll end up wi
th a fuller tool bag in the process. It is also better to learn on more than
one type of aircraft. As much as studying more than one POH in the early s
tages if training might seem like a burden it is good to understand how diff
erent types of airplanes require different procedures to operate. This will h
elp down the road as you transition to your beautiful Piet.
A private license is a long expensive process that is fraught with as many m
emorable wins as it is with aggravation and frustration. There's a reason wh
y few of our population holds the ticket. At 35 hours you've already proven y
our tenacity. Carry on and finish it up. It may not be as rewarding as the b
uild but it will certainly remain with you for the rest of your life as a gr
eat accomplishment. I haven't had a student come back after his/her flight t
est completion and say to me, "I wish I hadn't gone through this process."
As for tailwheel famil.... Just come over to the north side of Lake Erie and
I'll get you up to speed in my Champ!

Looks Great Ray, wish I could visit with you and swap build stories at Brodhead

As Jack says "Hang in there." Just keep enjoying learning to fly. I had to
switch instructors and it was not good. But I recovered. Moving to a
tailwheel will be much easier for you since you have some time in a "real"
airplane.
Just remember to nail the numbers coming down final and most planes land
pretty good.
BTW I am a fan of the Cessna 150. I Owned a 1959 model and put 600 hours on
it. Loved it. Not too fast. did not carry too much, DID NOT COST TOO MUCH.
A good compromise training aircraft.

Subject: | Re: I will try his again... |
I would be happy to discuss my build at any time, maybe via pm so others are not
bored! I think I will probably become a regular at Brodhead after this one.
At least Gary says attending becomes a chronic disease. Maybe we can meet up some
other time. Where are you located.
Thanks,
Ray Krause
