Of course, there is another option for saving weight on the empennage hinges; one that is even lighter than all of the above. One could simply make the hinges shown in the original plans. However, they are "fiddly" little things to make. It was for this reason that I opted to make my hinges the way I did (an idea I borrowed from Jim Markle, who borrowed the concept from the Bowers Fly Baby, I think.) Bill C. So Jerry, me and ol' Jack Cooper together in the J-3 weighed about the same as you flying it solo ;o) We were exactly the same height though! I will forever remember that cool and crisp November morning when Jack waved me over to the side of the grass after our second circuit of Tims Airpark north of Austin. After I stopped the plane, Jack unstrapped himself and got out. At that moment the Cub became the most incredible airplane in the world, because I was the captain at the stick, the sole manipulator of the controls, and I could see the instruments without having to lean to one side or the other to peek around Jack's shoulders. It was an incredible moment. At that same moment, that same day, about 20 miles due south of Tims, my wife and young son were sleeping peacefully in our 10x55 mobile home in a trailer park just across the highway from Bergstrom Air Force Base. On the field were rows of RF-4Cs and B-52s as the 12th Air Force trained tactical recon pilots in the Phantom in the Vietnam era out of Bergstrom. Some gave all so I could fly my solo that day while my young family slept, and I will not forget that. -------- Oscar Zuniga Medford, OR Air Camper NX41CC "Scout" A75 power Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=442550#442550 Attachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/ojz_3rd_131.jpg

Thank you very much for the comments on the hinges. I also borrowed the idea. Since I have the sheet metal facility, they looked attractive. I just eyeballed the metal thickness. If it comes to weight and balance one day, =8BI can easily throw away the present ones and design something ligh ter. I am sure if I go into calculations, the hinges will come out with a safety factor of something like 20. I did not decide on my conti A-65 location yet. I read somewhere I have to make the nose (actually engine mount) 6" longer or I have to tilt the cabanes back, moving the wing rearwards. I did not like the idea because it shortens the tail moment. It may make things worse. I think I will go as close as possible to the original angle of the cabanes, vertical. Any ideas?
