    Gary, I funded the whole project with the agreement the airplane would be mine. Only students interested in the project have worked on it. Our classes are only 43 minutes long, so they do not have much time to work. We have only worked on the airplane during the school day. The students that started the project have graduated. Some stop by to check on progress. We do not have a formal aviation program. We have a wood shop, Manufacturing class and independent study. We have managed to work pieces of the aircraft into all the classes. We have used AC 43-13 as our guide and used all aircraft grade materials. I plan on flying the aircraft. Late fall is the projected time to fly the aircraft, when we get out inspection. My tailwheel time is in a Cessna 140 and Aeronca Champ. We started with a polyfiber covering on the fuselage, but removed it and used Oratex. No paint, no chemicals and was easy to work with. Use wax and grease remover before you apply the finish tapes. The wax from the stitching needs to be removed. Considering the number of times we move the aircraft, we have only had one piece of say hangar rash on the project. I wish the classes had more time, but we do the best we can. Thursday is the last day of school. This is a just a lot of thoughts quickly put together, grades are due and clean up.     Hi Douwe! i don't really have any answers for you but I am probably the youngest builder on this list at 21 yrs old. I got my project half completed two years ago when I was 19. Also did my private license when I was 19 and commercial & IFR ratings 6 months ago. I have met a few younger builders but not very many which I am trying to change. My project is coming along. A major hurdle was completed last weekend when I picked up its fuel tank that I had professionally fabricated and welded. I had no idea how I was going to get that checked off the list but thanks to Scott Knowlton I was able to use his pattern and and get it welded by the same gent. It got me to thinking, what was happening during those years that stimulated so much interest and building that isnt happening now?. Maybe Im wrong, but Just think of all the projects started around then and it is quite remarkable. Id love others input, especially those who got into it then, but I came to two different possibilities. 1. There was a strong and active Pietenpol club that really helped generate interest in the plane 2. People had more expendable resources and werent lured away from a plans built plane by quick-build/snap together kits. 3. All of the above? I look around at Brodhead, and the projects being worked on and ask myself, where are the young people building and with a few exceptions, there arent many. As always, the loss of the next generation bodes ill for the future if we cant change things. Which led me to my next question (s) 1. What can we do corporately and individually to increase Pietenpol awareness in the homebuilding community? Thoughts? Douwe

    Subject: Ray Stitts Gone West

    Hello Pieters, EAA Chapter One sent a notice out yesterday that one of our Pioneers "Ray Stitts" had gone west.. He missed an EAA board meeting (HE never misses them) last week with flu like symptoms. Now he is gone. He will be greatly missed. I used to look forward to seeing him nearly every time I flew into Flabob airport. For those who don't know, Ray had designed several airplanes and created the Stitts fabric system, which is now the Poly Fiber System. I will certainly miss Ray. He was a very generous man and has been one of the folks we can thank collectively for making aviation what it is today.     Steve; I don't have any free time but if I did, I have a long list of things that I could do with it. I once got it in my mind that one of the best-looking airplanes I've ever seen was the Britten-Norman BN-2A "Islander" twin and that the lines of it were simple enough that a homebuilt version (scaled down, of course) could be laid out and built with twin Corvairs for power. Constant-chord wing, fixed gear, and imagine having the power quadrant up on the cabin ceiling ;o) There is one other twin that I like even more than the Islander and it's the Partenavia P68. However, that one is a little swoopier and would probably be more difficult to do a good knock-off job in composite.
