      Jack,
Excellent idea. Maybe something in Dick's name to the Brodhead chapter. Dick (along
with Dave Aldrich) was the main guy behind the Piet fuse we made at Sun n
Fun and donated to them to auction off.

Many of you have attended my Brat lunch at Brodhead. I'm thinking this year
we could have a "donation jar" for those that would like to contribute something
to recognize Dick or assistance for his family in some way. Your thoughts?

      Steve,
There is no telling how many Piet's Dick influenced, except that it is allot. I
know he built at least 2 Piet's. The radial and the blue and white A65 Piet Tools
bought. He was working on a Sky Scout.
Now Dick would say that most of the radial Piet was built by the Sun n Fun wood
shop crew, like a Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn kind of thing. But I can tell you getting
all the materials from Minn. to Lakeland FL, watching over the build and taking
the completed fuse, wing and tail feathers back to Minn. is no small amount
of work. I guess that would count as both build and influence.

If there are any new builders in the NE Illinois or SE Wisconsin area and are just
getting started. I have a few items available that might give them a kick
      start.
a rib jig, rib top strip forming jig, A65 motor mount jig, some motor mount pieces,
landing gear hinge bushings, 4x4 sheet of 1/16 ply for rib gussets, couple
sample ribs. these are free to anyone willing to pick them up in Zion, IL.

Wife & I were friends Dick and Joanie. Sometimes we would be planning on going
to some event, and he'd say "Bring Mary, because then Joanie will go too and
it'll be fun". Last year we laughed as our wifes were wading through mud at Blakesburg
after heavy rains, and we told them to be sure to check between their
      toes for leeches.

A couple years ago at the MN State Fair, the 4 of us were walking along and I found
a $20 bill on the ground. I'll be putting that $20 in the Jar at Brodhead...

Dick helped a lot with a Pietenpol that a group of us here in MN are building together.
We made the first rib in the basement of Dick's house during a Christmas
Party, and we all signed our names on it.

Dick was building a Sky Scout. I hadn't seen it for a while, so I don't know how
far along it got, but at the time it was further along than the Piet that our
group was building. He had evaluated putting a V-twin engine on it, as well
as looking into using a "Wisconsin V-4", but had eventually decided on a Corvair.
He planned on putting the Sky Scout on floats and painting it in Harley
Davidson colors. I told him that since it's a Sky Scout he really ought to finish
it like an Indian motorcycle, with big fenders and tassles hanging everywhere,
but he laughed and said he was more of a Harley guy.

Just a couple weeks ago Dick was handing me sandbags as we helped a fellow builder
skin his Glasair project. That was the last time I saw him.

Sure am going to miss him...

      Hey all,

My early father's day present was a Garmin NUVI auto gps. Since my second
"aviation grade" Garmin puked right before Brodhead last year, I flew with
my iphone as my primary navigation backed up by charts on my knee pad in
case it quit. I had used the iphone the previous year to back up my garmin
so it worked great for two years. Always keep a paper backup though.

Anyways, I got to wondering if this auto gps would work in the plane and
serve as a last ditch gps backup for the iphone. Went flying and sure
enough, it works fine. There's not much detail or aviation related info,
but many airports are there and in "offroad" mode, it'll show a direct path.
Seems like a fine backup gps.

      Keep the charts though!

Have read quite a few articles about aileron usage during rollout/groundloop
speeds. Did some experimenting the other day on asphalt with no wind.
Turns out that once the speed decreases and ailerons stop working as
      designed, they become flaps.

So I'd taxi down the runway and if I held the stick all the way left, the
plane went right and visa versa. As the plane swerved right, I could steer
      it back with right aileron.

So at lower speeds, using aileron as if flying isn't helping things, though
I don't really think I could train my muscle-memory to reverse everything
while my adrenalin is pumping as I try to stop a ground loop.

Pat and others thanks for sharing your stories about Dick. I always enjoyed
visiting with him wherever we were, Brodhead, Oshkosh and Blakesburg. He

Rudder counteracts adverse yaw.that's why the Piet has such a big rudder! I
stalled a downwind wing on landing by throwing in upwind aileron.at a slow
speed. That wing comes down hard when it quits flying. IMHO, practicing with
ailerons on landing is bad idea that will lead to nasty results. Better to
practice with dancing on the rudder.

Subject: Pietenpol-List: aileron resonse on rollout
