I also had a phone interview with Mr. Twombly last month. Is that Flight Training
Magazine an internet thing, or in print? I am an AOPA member and do receive
the main AOPA print mag. How does one get the Flight Training version?

Pietenpols are going mainstream! I gave Ian Twombly from AOPA Pilot magazine a
flight about a month ago, and someone just emailed me that a picture of 9MikeLima
is in the July issue of AOPA's Flight Training magazine.
Twombly writes, "The Piet is aviation at it's best - it's flown low enough to see
details on the ground, slow enough to linger, and open to the world with all
its smells and sounds. It's freedom from gravity at its finest."
I think he gets it!

Jon, I am not sure about the extreme price difference on a kit. But I will
say that one of the best deals Aircraft Spruce has going is the bargain bag
of spruce.
I wish I had bought it sooner. It is a lot of left over odds and ends from
other cuts. You may have to wait until they have enough for a box. I got
pieces in many dimensions up to 1by 6 inches. Lengths were from 6 inches to
5 feet.

Find any batt that works but if you need nose weight id definately go bigger capacity,
heck, why not. Then get a "battery tender" which comes with a female
plug to install permanently on the terminals. I found this plug fits a variety
of chargers including my solar charger.
Use the battery tender at home and solar charger where there's no power.
Honestly, they make a super small batt tender that is really light. One could then
make up a really long lightweight extension cord and use it pretty much anywhere
you could find 110 outlet

I used a 12 volt battery from a "deer feeder" because it was on sale. Still
fairly small 4"x6"x 10" and placed it on the back side of my firewall. I
strapped it in. but a flybaby buddy simply wedged his in with dense foam.

I tested AS&S two days ago and they matched Wick's 1"x4 3/4"x14' spar price of
$9.09/ft without the 10% up-charge at 14'.
Wick's has a 15% premium on lengths 14' and over.
Their freight quote for the spars was $120 less than Wick's
I was fortunate to have discovered an off the grid builder very nearby that was
needing to order spars also, so we are splitting the freight.
AS&S offers EAA Visa discounts also.
I'd buy locally if local wasn't more than an hour away.
I think 98% of my build time is shopping.

Great work and great report Curt!!! It sounds like you did your homework and
ACS complied with their matching price claim so I'm encouraged by
that. It really pays to shop around on this stuff and for things like freight
charges, it can really make a difference.
If anyone is driving to Oshkosh too both ACS and Wicks have big displays up there
and I, for one, had great luck with Wicks delivering my wing spars to
Oshkosh where I picked them up one year and took them home atop my roof-----zero
freight charges which was great! If you need some larger items and can
pick them up at Oshkosh, see if ACS or Wicks will let you pick them up right there
at the show.

I prefer to "do my homework" prior to making any purchase and agree with Mi
ke C. and Curt M. Although it takes time and may become frustrating at time
s, one may be able to save quite a bit of money over the entire build proce
ss. I was able to purchase all of my sitka, (minus the wing spars) in bulk
and in the rough. Making usable, correct size pieces from these was very sa
tisfying. I also bought my 4130, aluminum and plywood from smaller, less kn
own, mom-and-pop places (or local) and saved quite a bit. Even items like a
ircraft tools, fasteners, and other hardware can be found for some good pri
ces. Granted, back when I first started building, prices were better and si
tka was easier to find, but a little time invested searching=C2- around m
ay prove to be a worthy effort for those pinching pennies and trying to bui
ld an aircraft.

Subject: | Re: Wicks vs Aircraft Spruce |
I just compared aircraft spruce kit vs. buying individual pieces for elevator...from
kit is $44.50, individual parts $114.17. Wicks does not offer kit, but individual
parts are $89.06. If A.S. kit price is true, a person should jump on
it NOW, as it is less than half of what parts are. And just in case anyone is
wondering, listed in their kit contents, it does include needed plywood. If I
cannot get pieces as cheap as kit prices, I wonder if I would be ahead to buy
bigger pieces of spruce and resaw myself? I have a pretty decent shop for instrument
building, and a REALLY good, thin kerf, bandsaw resaw setup.

I think that's basically what I'm going to do. I don't have power at the airstrip,
so a solar charger is the way I'm going with it.

Subject: | Re: auto GPS test |
Please don't miss the point that Matt made! It's lost in the subtlety of how he
said it, but when you change something on your airplane, consider the effect
that it might have on the CG! Matt changed props and has since then noticed
that the plane can get tail heavy as fuel burns off. Just because we fly experimentals
and we have a very free hand to do what we'd like to do with them, this
points out a very important effect.
Changes out at the tail can have a more noticeable (even profound) effect on CG,
but just because you've got a nice heavy Corvair or Ford out on the nose, don't
think that going from a wood prop to a metal one, or maybe even going from
a slim Aerocarb to a nice sturdy Marvel Schebler won't have any noticeable effect.
It's easy and (for some of us) even fun to recalculate the CG when making
changes like this. A weight and balance spreadsheet makes it even easier to
do what-ifs to see the effects of making changes.
The best part of it all is that if you take a couple of hours to carefully measure
all of the moment arms and to accurately weigh your airplane in the level
and empty configuration, you will never have to do it again. Do it once, do it
the right way, and use good scales. Now you can see where to mount that battery
to give you the best operating envelope. You can see what moving the wing
aft by another inch might do. You can see what your maximum allowable passenger
weight is with full fuel in the tank, or what the minimum pilot weight is
with a full tank, or... or... a whole lot of other things. It might also keep
you from getting into trouble if you happen to change something and then go
out to test-fly the new setup without knowing in advance if the CG has changed
appreciably.
Thanks for bringing that up, Matt.

Hah. Flying the stunt in a couple of Piets would make the Red Bull stunt look
like child's play. The Piets would fly in the open door at one end, land to a
full stop inside and turn off smoke, one of the pilots would climb out and open
the doors at the other side, and then they would roll out, smoke on, and be
flying when they exited the other side. Try THAT in your Extra 300!
