Thanks to all of you! :-)

What a day! It sure attracted attention. With all the talking,
explaining, etc, oh, and the sun, it took two days to
      recover.
There's a lot to do yet before covering. The REAL struts have
to be made, engine and fuel system work and testing, other
      stuff, then inspection number one.

I should have taken a pic of the sign on the struts. So many
thought these knotty, square sticks were the finished
      struts. I had to make the signs in big letters;

"These are not the real struts, they are temporary!"

I think folks got the message. Not sure of a few though. :-)

Oh, and a couple of fellows turned up who have this piet
that has been all over the place and may or may not
have flown in the past. He's got a Corvair on the front.
Fuselage needs covering, some cabling has to be done.
I'm not sure what else. Changes have been made of
      course.

Nice to see it in the sun, Clif! I'll bet those struts drew all kinds
      of smart-ass comments.

Since Aircraft Spruce started selling smoke oil in gallon containers, I use
their "Super-Dri" smoke oil. It leaves no residue on the airplane and makes
the densest, most persistent smoke I've seen.

Happy 4th my Piet Friends. We are looking forward to hosting another Brat

past year, Dick Navratil, Vitalis Kapler and Billy McCaskill.

At lunch we will ask for donations for Dick and Vi. If you can't make
lunch, you can mail a check to me at 2400 South 14th St, West Des Moines, IA
50265. If you have a PayPal account you could also do a donation to
      <mailto:jack@textors.com> jack@textors.com.

Donations to help defray Billy's funeral expenses can be made to
      <http://www.gofundme.com/y6rmx4> http://www.gofundme.com/y6rmx4. We hope to
have enough to fund benches at Brodhead and/or Oshkosh.

Lunch will be at our bus on the SE corner of the field, Friday the 17th at
11:30, rain or shine. Bring a chair and your beverage, we will provide the

Thank you for the information. I also have the CAD drawing for a Nicopress gauge
in case somebody wants to make one by laser cutting and calibrating. As soon
as I am confident with press size, this is what I'm going to do. The question
was metric sizes. Now, do you think it is ok if I interpolate the dimensions,
ie. 3mm is 0.175mm smaller than 1/8" so, finished size of the press should also
      bo 0.175mm smaller?

      Thanks in advance

As far as I know, ethylene glycol is common glycerin. It can safely be used on
skin for cold cracks. Inhaling or drinking... I don't know. But if necessary,
I can easily obtain the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for it.

      Hey Jack,

Been talking to Mike Weeden at brodhead, here's the email I just got from him

      Mike,

We are working on our beacon memorial and developing an area for this sort
of thing. One of our ideas is lasered paver blocks. We have one example
now and If you or someone that knew Dick a little better could provide us
with the spelling of his name and his born-on date and departed date we
could make a sample to show during the fly-in and help us finalize the
design of the display. Or link me to his obit. I forgot his hometown.

We will look into a bench too. The plastic ones are not as maintenance free
as we'd hoped but we will try to find a local supplier for the concrete
ones. The cheapest plastic bench ends up being almost $600. I'll get a
price on a concrete one with an attached plaque.

      Happy Fourth,
      Mike Weeden

So, something is in the works. I'll keep working with him. We will figure out
the finances later. Thanks as usual for the brat lunch, seems a good venue for
      a memorial.

Ethylene glycol is used in anti-freeze and runway deicing. It is not
      the same as glycerin.

It is toxic if you drink it, but I suspect it wouldn't be an issue if
      used as a smoke solution.

As an aside, the medical treatment for consumption of ethylene glycol
used to involve the placement of an IV line and the administration of
alcohol directly to the blood stream. The alcohol would displace one of
the toxic breakdown products in the liver. I am sure that the medical
profession has since devised a less amusing treatment method :)
