I'm wanting to make a bulk purchase of lumber from a local supplier who does not
stock it. He needs a board feet number to give to the supplier.
Anyone have a good number to start with?

The spars are about 35... Doubling that should get you in the ballpark depending
on how well it grades out.
Hopefully available in sixteen foot boards.

In general, I find that 1 is usually a good number to start with.
Seriously, though, did your supplier give you any indication of the size of boards
he would be supplying? You're going to need full 1" finished thickness for
the longerons (and a few other pieces).
I have used 2 rough sawn planks 2" x 6" @ 20 ft long - that's 40 board feet (plus
a bargain bag of spruce from Aircraft Spruce) to build my ribs, empennage and
fuselage. Spar material will be additional to this.

Those are pretty good figures guys!
As it turns out, I just sat down with the sub-kit lists available at Aircraft Spruce's
website and did the math.
Spars are 19bf for 3/4" stock and 25.33bf for 1".
The rest adds up to about 42bf.
I haven't bothered with the plywood yet.
My seller is sourcing both Sitka Spruce (custom cut) and Douglas Fir for me. We
came up with stock sizes that minimize cuts to keep costs down and still allow
me to create the pieces I need using the equipment I now have.
I'm a bit worried about quality though being sight unseen. With that in mind, I
am ordering 60bf minus the spar material to allow for plenty of saw loss and
errors. That's almost 50% more than I need (in theory).
I'll study some planes, take plenty of pictures, and talk to some folks at Oshkosh
before I decide which path I wind up taking for spars.
Thanks fellas!

Andy,
When I first started looking for Spruce I contacted all of the crap sources and
I found that they were maybe 40-ish percent higher than McCormick's lumber in
Madison Wisconsin.
So if you're traveling to Brodhead and Oshkosh this year for you know anybody who
is picking up your lumber in Madison at Mccormicks, or at least check out their
prices.

2nd the McCormick's route.
Note that it's all rough cut so it needs to be resawn, planned and ripped to the
appropriate size. I have found a local business though that will mill it down
to what i need for very a reasonable price as I do not have a planner.

Bill Church,
It does not change anything you said but 2" (or 8/4) X 6" X 20' is twenty board
feet, not 40.

Pietenpeople, I am forced to pause my progress on my Piet due to a career
change. For the next 6 months or so I will be in north Oklahoma,
southwest Colorado and south central Texas. Perhaps I will see some of your
planes or projects along with the pietenpeople who own them.
I will be following the list.
Blue Skies,
