Um, this still doesn't make sense to me: 0.5 gal/hp/hr x 100hp = 50gal/hr? Am I missing something? I would think the burn should the be 0.05gal/hp/hr to get 5gph @ 100hp. I believe the rule of thumb for thermal efficiency of aircraft engines fuel and horsepower is .5lb/hp/hr which in the 100hp engine equals just over 8GPH (50 pounds/6 pounds per gallon= 8.1). which makes sense since it only generates 100HP at full throttle at sea level and we would rarely operate in that window. Usually we are powered to 75% at cruise which would give the more reasonable 5GPH. But don't quote me on any of the above. perhaps 0.5 lbs per hour. that is a typical specific consumption for a piston engine. OK, that makes sense. Thanks. No need to hypothesize. I get right near 5gph....cruise at 2700. Admittedly, I have my timing backed off just a bit from the 32 deg max, so may be getting a bit under 100hp. Specific fuel consumption, as I remember it from Tech days so long ago, is measured in pounds per brake horsepower per hour. As mentioned by others, it usually is about 0.5 lbs./bhp/hr. yes forgot to include the "per hp" term.
