Subject: | Tank Shape/Support |
Now that I know the Corvair fuel burn, approximately 5 GPH, I want an 18 gallon
nose tank.
Does anyone have a nose tank approximately that size? What does it look like, dimensions?
What kind of structure do you have to support it and secure it to the
fuselage?
Thanks.

Any Piets that fly in to 3VA7 (White Post, Va) this weekend 10/17-18 will
be fed and housed. I live 4 miles from the 2000' grass strip and am
shuttle. Just let me know if yer gonna show. One can pop in for overnighter
or pass through sat or sun. Let me know so I might stock up.

Harvey,
A liquid gallon is 231 cubic inches. Therefore, an 18 gallon tank requires a minimum
of 4158 cubic inches, not counting the outer dimensions of the tank, straps,
etc. So, is there that much room between the front cockpit and the firewall?
I do not know. Maybe someone can answer that question.
More importantly, have you done computations on your weight and balance accounting
for 108 pounds of fuel in that location forward of the datum, and then the
shift in CG when you get down to unusable fuel in the tank? Those are the questions
I would want to get answered before I did too much planning.

Sketches of a fuselage tank by Mike Cuy are here.
http://westcoastpiet.com/images/Mike%20Cuy%20A-65%20Piet/images/PietNoseTankSketch.jpg.jpg
Attached is a sketch I made of a nose tank of about 15 gallons, which is similar
to ones depicted in Mike Cuy's often recommended Sport Plane Builder book by
Tony Bingelis. I don't have a drawing of an 18 gallon tank.
When designing my tank, I drew a 3-d model in Sketch-up. It was helpful because
it can do volume calculations of odd shapes. The software is not too hard to
learn.
