Subject: | Re: Split gear question |
Thanks Bill I always appreciate your thoughtful comments. I noticed the 2 hole
drawing as well. When fabricating the gear I delayed drilling the bottom holes
until fitting up now. Glad I did, it's a pretty tight fit. Seems many of
the "fit-ups" vary with the temp and moisture content of the wood...

fitting is there because the 1/4" thick "lug" that is welded to the bracket
(and also welded to the 3/4" round "lug") will end up covering one of the 3/16"
dia holes. The left and right bracket weldments are not really mirror images
of each other. On the right gear, the 1/4" thick lug is mounted at the front
end of the 3/4" round lug, whereas, on the left gear it is mounted at the rear
of the round lug (a difference of 1".) In the attached photo, I've circled
the left bracket, and it sure looks like the rear 3/16" hole would not be accessible.
> As for why the hole is 1/4", and not 3/16", it is probably to allow a "beefed-up"
fastener (1/4" dia) to be used, to compensate for the less than ideal, non-symmetric
fastener location. This bolt will be subjected to higher loads than
the locations marked for 3/16" holes.

one bolt shown. Pretty sure that is simply an accidentally omitted detail
- there should be two bolts shown.

Should I attach a spring setup between my tailwheel control arm and the tab

Steve,
My current setup is similar (without dampening springs), and I have
absolutely no shimmy. Note the eyebolt, an idea I got from Mike Cuy. My
main gear is only 52=9D wide, and this tailwheel (my second setup)
has saved some pretty sorry-assed landings!

Steve; my tailwheel setup has the same springs and short lengths of chain as in
the other photos. Never a hint of shimmy. As a result of this, I have never
made a bad landing in all the time I've been flying the Piet. Well, maybe there
was just the one time...

Beautiful work, Jack! That must have been a lot of work to make the lightening
holes in the turtledeck formers. However, I would have used a bit of restraint
when making holes in the formers all the way up close to the top of the rear
cockpit. I find myself bracing myself with a hand, or even sometimes sitting
on the edge of the rear cockpit, while getting in or out. Probably not an issue
though.

Subject: | Re: Emergency checklist s |
Steve;
This is likely to get me booted off the list, but at this point I've got nothing
to lose except my pride and a few friends.
I don't have any printed checklists for Air Camper NX41CC.
I'll admit that I'm not military or ex-military, never been a corporate pilot,
never flown anything bigger or heavier than a turbo Seneca and the only jet I've
flown was a Prowler simulator, so maybe I don't deserve to fly in airspace
with real pilots, but I've scratched my head and haven't come up with enough things
to put on a checklist for a no-electrics, no-radios, no-nothing know-nothing
like me and Scout. What I learned in my early years of flying a hand-prop
40HP Cub was CIGARS and that was it. Seems to be all I need for the Piet.
C-ontrols free, correct, and full travel.
I-nstruments set (altimeter is all I've got that's adjustable).
G-as turned on.
A-ttitude (no trim on my airplane, but I check "my" attitude)
R-unup.
S-afety (seatbelts secured, nothing loose in the cockpit).
On downwind there isn't much to check. If I stretched it to a GUMPS mnemonic checklist,
if the Gas wasn't on, I wouldn't be flying; there is no Undercarriage
to lower; no Manifold pressure adjustment; no Prop adjustment; and that just
leaves Safety checks. Don't need a checklist for that.
Carb heat is the one thing I've always got to manage, but that's it. I'm sure
there are good speeds to be aware of when flying this airplane and I don't mean
to make light of it, but the airspeed range of my Air Camper from stall to Vne
is only something like 60 MPH and if I'm flying it in a stable configuration,
I'm in the middle of that range and everything is pretty good. I could probably
squeeze a little extra glide out of it if I held best glide instead of 5-7
MPH either side of it, but it's more work to watch the airspeed indicator
to make that happen than it is to keep my head out of the cockpit looking for
a good place to land. I'd lose more altitude fumbling around looking for a checklist
to nail a best glide speed than I would just flying the airplane to a
decent landing spot.
Checklists are good and they are necessary. My last biennial flight review was
in an airplane with a full glass cockpit and 13 fuel sump points to check. Backup
steam gauge instruments, electric system, radios, dozens of switches and
breakers, lights, and checklists for everything under the sun. No GUMPS, no
CIGARS... you fly these airplanes by the checklists and I get that. I'm just
not sure what you could put on a Piet checklist (no electrics, no radios) that
you don't already know.
I would duck for cover after coming out as a checklist heretic but it gets harder
the older I get so maybe I'll just take the bullets and see if I survive.

My springs and cables are not attached to the rudder, they run up through
the belly to the rudder pedals. They hang loose until I get in and put my
feet on the pedals. If I just put my feet flat of the floor I might have a
shimmy but I would probably be too engrossed in the ground loop to notice.
I will get in and have a buddy check to see what the tension is.
I Have been flying an Aeronca Champ and if your springs are loose you are
in trouble.
