Jon,
No, the plans do not show 28ga aluminum. They call for the use of 6-ply hard cardboard
or 1/16" plywood. Don't think anybody has used the cardboard option
for many years, though.
Some have used aluminum, but there are issues to contend with if you choose to
go that route. One issue is figuring out how to attach the aluminum to the wooden
ribs. Glue will not work (in the long run), and nails will eventually work
their way out. Another issue is that aluminum and wood will expand and contract
at different rates, as the temperature rises and falls.

Bill, I agree with you on all the reasons not to use aluminum, but I wonder what
the reference to aluminum is on the wing drawing in the flying and glider manual?
Personally, I will probably just use the best quality ply I can find, apply
it in the middle or upper humidity range I expect it to live in on average
(so if any change occurs it will err towards tightening) and then seal it asap.

Ray,
Thanks for contacting him. I do not have facebook. It is great that he is offered this site as another resource to him. We need to also let him know about www.westcoastpiet.com as well.
As others have said, if he reaches out to us, we should do everything we can to
help him with his quest.
Asmelash has great ambition and a great drive. He has proven that to me. When
I look at the Youtube video, I can't help but wonder which of all those young
faces in that group he is influencing????? I wonder who influenced him? I wonder
if a plane from this group is what gave him inspiration? Maybe he had seen
Mike Cuy's, Gary Boothe's, Tools, or even my plane? Hard to say. But we all
are the guys and gals who are keeping Bernie Pietenpol's dream alive. It looks
like it may be his turn in Africa to keep the dream alive.
I hope to see him on this forum asking questions.
Cheers all,

Hmmm... I never noticed that before. The Flying and Glider plans actually do
say to use 28ga aluminum on the leading edge of the wing.
I have no idea how anyone manages to actually build an airplane using only the
plans in the Flying and Glider reprints. Those drawings are so small.
