    Jeff; you're may have something there... I have seen that blackened alligatoring on old outboard motor fuel tank floats. Whatever the case, it seems like you've solved your problem with the small aluminum bottle (non-TSO'd, non-STC'd, probably no FAA Form 337, unlikely that it's in AC 43.13-1B "Acceptable Methods", and not in the Bingelis books, so be careful). The cork float on Scout's float indicator were dipped in epoxy when Corky made it (and there is some subtle serendipity there, too). So far no sign of any problems with Corky's cork float, but then again I don't fly auto gas and never have. You should probably attempt expanded flotation testing on yours with something besides pastis though. Ouzo is very good for this, so are mastika, raki, mezcal, aguardiente, and Sambuca.     When I was younger I might have tried all of those contaminants, but now I'm pretty much limited to beer, wine, and the occasional martini.     Subject: Slightly OT: Video of friend's Pup

    While the Piet is down, we shifted the action cam over to another low-n-slow plane. This is a link to a video of a flight my friend took yesterday in his Pup (I flew it after him; no video of that). He rebuilt this plane while recovering from his THIRD round of cancer. He says the Pup, his wife, and his docs and nurses saved him -- he's just not sure in which order on any particular day! https://youtu.be/23O9_06ku9M .     Jeff, Was it a vintage shellac coated float you epoxy coated? If possible my guess would be that while epoxy coated, there was a pinhole hole in the coating somewhere. Alcohol, being more viscous than either fuel or water made it's way in, and attacked the shellac. Being coated, it deformed the expoxy and bubbled up underneath, creating more holes and the system went south pretty quick. It would create quite a gunk, a bimaterial layer of shellac/epoxy being attacked from underneath. It's really hard to coat a porous surface like cork. Shellac merely slows the ingress of fuel to the cork, it's not a impenetrable coating. Neither is epoxy unless really carefully applied. If the surface isn't smooth and shiny like a plastic casting, there are holes somewhere. Also, alcohol has an affinity for water, which is what rusted the coat hangar. Gas doesn't, they don't mix and the water sits on the bottom of the tank and corrodes it there. Alcohol dissolved in the fuel, holds the water and presents it to the coat hangar so to speak. Dot 4 and older brake fluid, has alcohol and does the same thing inside brake systems. Dot 5 is silicone based and mnch better.     Well of course he noticed that he dropped a phone or radio or something as he exited the aircraft? So what's up with the fuel venting out of the starboard filler cap in flight? Just a full tank? Couldn't have been the fuel warming up in the sun.     Hello John, I was wondering where I stand with news letters? I did get my last one back in September or so off the Matronics web site. And the one before that from you. Am I on the list to receive the current and the next one that will come out in March???? Question?? I did make it to Brodhead this year. I did buy 2 T-shirts while there. I did not look at them until I got back to Alabama. They are great shirts but they are not the ones i had seen on the Brodhead website. I was looking for the T-shirt with the Sky Scout design. Do you know if they are still available?? Thank You!     Jeff: thanks. I was just watching the video and as the flight progresses, fuel streaks back farther and farther aft from the cap as if it was streaming out. I'd like to know more about what he powers it with. A 1/2VW? When he pulls it through to start the engine, it seems to have pretty good compression. He seems to fly the approach "down the slot" at about the same rate as your Piet, if not maybe just a bit faster!
