Subject: | Pauls Piet Build |
Hello all: i havent been very active on the forum or my piet build over the past
year . drama on the home front. but what little time i get to work on the plane
is always enjoyable and therapeutic. I hesitate posting pics because of the
"why in the world would you do that" type of questions. I am definitely straying
from the plans and doing it my way. i apologize to any purists out there.
Im going for a 30's vintage racer look, and although im building a steel tube
piet i am more than making up for it with the teak and holly veneer. Ive always
wanted to build an old wooden boat now i can kind of check that box off too.
To help give me the piet racer look (calling her Super Piet), i lowered the
wing about 1.5 inches, made very wide fairings for my struts and also rerouted
the aileron cables within the aft cabane strut fairings. ill also be fabricating
a streamlined pressure cowling with a very large spinner. she'll atleast
look fast. the center section is a bit wider. wanted a slightly larger fuel
tank up there, plus i made a very wide flop/flap. the wide center section and
flop allow me to access the cockpit by standing up within the flop space then
steping in. while i was making the flop i got the idea on the flap. it has a
5 and 10 degree setting. very simple handle on trailing edge to move it up and
down. not expecting much out of it. if nothing else, will still be useful as
a flop. the front door will make entry there doable even with the lower wing.
also made a plug for the front cockpit when flying solo. adding 2 or 3 feet to
the wingspan. the top of the fuselage (teak and holy) is built in 3 pieces.
turtle deck, rear cockpit and front cockpit/baggage compartment. for inspection
purposes, those 3 sections are easily removed after unscrewing the numerous
stainless screws along the sides. a few other things, but thats plenty for now.

That is some very nice craftsmanship... I'm curious- what engine do you plan on
running? The wood fairings on the cabanes is something I have not seen before-
could you post more pictures of your process with those? I really like them.

Hi Paul!
I was thinking of doing a "racer" type as well..
was thinking to mount my wing even LOWER! Like just below eye level!
I would like to see your wing height...

I like it. Can't wait to see more. It reminds me of the Corbin Ace I like so
much. Do the red seat belts give away your interior color choice? The old outrigger
landing gear would look really cool too. Or tall thin tires with large
wheel pants like the old racers had. You opened up a whole bunch of ideas.
Just amazing Paul.

I see that you are able to weld other steel with no problem. Are you. Using 4130
rod on the other steel?
I ask this because it is possible to get bad metal.Or bad rod.

thanks guys.
Scott. i was considering the outrigger gear but will be going a different route.
but i do have a somewhat different wheel fairing design in mind. couple
of other slightly different ideas as well.
the wing height is 1 inch lower but appears to be 2.25 inches lower because
of the curvature of the wood fuselage begins 1.25 above the longeron. running
a fire breathing Corvair of course!
the fairing is attached in 3 points along trailing edge of strut. welded a tab
on back side of strut that a block of wood is screwed to so the fairing has
something to screw in to. the blocks on the aft cabane struts double as fairleads
for the aileron cables. its not the perfect aerodynamic shape. im sure it
can be done better. ive got some better stainless steel screws on the way. will
make it a little more flush.

The woodwork is just absolutely amazing! Wish I had the skills and patience that
Paul has. I really like the cabane struts and the wide center section, very
"rakish" , speedy looking. Thanks for sharing,
