Welcome Ed, great summary! Looks like you are making great progress and tha

I could be wrong but I believe Jerry Dotson on this list has a similar eng

Welcome! The "hybrid" is a Grega GN-1. I own one (didn't build). It has
clipped Cub wings, Cub Gear.

Tools,
No, I won't be going to Brodhead this year. it's kinda far for me and I would
need to take three weeks off work to do it. It's five days of flying each way
with decent weather.
I do have another Piet camping trip scheduled for July 15th weekend. I'm going
to the gold country of CA. Columbia airport about 4.5 hours north of me. A
bunch of flying guys going. That should be fun.
Enjoy Brodhead,

Hi KTown and Marcus,
The plane Marcus said he has seen is mine. The tearm Hybrid is a great description.
Anyway, I still owe him a ride. For whatever reason we weren't able to
provide him hi ride at that time.
KTown, I sent you a text a few minutes ago.
Cheers,

Hi Ed,
Welcome to the world of Pietenpols, and Pietenpeople!
A couple of suggestions for you:
If at all possible, try to come to Brodhead for the annual Pietenpol/Hatz
fly-in. It will be in just a few weeks (July 21-23) at C37, Brodhead
Wisconsin (about 90 miles south of Oshkosh). There you can see (and
possibly get a ride in) up to two dozen different Pietenpols. In additiona
there are forums geared toward Pietenpol construction. Well worth the trip,
if you can make it, and it's right before that "other" fly-in in Wisconsin
so you can see both on one trip.
As for your instrumentation plans, I doubt the FAA will grant an
airworthiness certificate with your instrumentation being just an iPhone 6
and a couple of instruments. The regs require at a minimum that you have an
altimeter, airspeed indicator, oil pressure, oil temperature, and a magnetic
compass.
Before Mike Cuy or someone else says it, I'll tell you to buy the Tony
Bingelis books: The Sportplane Builder, Sportplane Construction Techniques,
Firewall Forward, and Tony Bingelis on Engines. You can get them from the
EAA. Invaluable information for building a plane from scratch.
As for your prop selection, I wouldn't go by anything you read on the
Tailwind forum. A Pietenpol has a LOT more drag than a Tailwind and the
airplane's speed affects prop selection. Looking at Super Cubs (or Hatz
Biplanes) with O-290's would make more sense. Aircraft Spruce lists a
Sensenich wooden prop for an O-290 powered Super Cub as 74 x 49.
Good to have you building a Pietenpol!

Hi all,
Just a quick introduction to this Matronics Pietenpol family.
My name is Ed Knouse, better known as "KTOWN" to family and friends. I am a
first-time, novice builder, who purchased a partially completed Pietenpol
Air Camper about a year ago. I'm based out of Calvada Meadows (NV74) in
Pahrump, Nevada. I've learned a great deal about Experimental
Amateur-Building in the past year with a very steep learning curve! I've
already learned some valuable lessons the hard way as well! Until now I've
only been following a "Tailwind" forum on Yahoo (for reasons I'll explain
later)!
I'm a former Air Force pilot (F-16s, U-2s and C-12s among other training
aircraft). I'm fairly new to the GA world (just the last 3 years)...again a
steep learning curve...flying C-172s and SR-20/22s (several "flavors" of
each), C-206, the PAC-750 parachute plane on Sundays at Jean, NV for fun and
excitement (and to supplement my "aircraft porn" addiction!) and I've got
about a half dozen landings in an RV-6! I've had a few "trike" rides as
well and hope to complete my checkout in a trike in the next few months as
time permits! I just completed my Single Engine Sea rating with Mo Martin
and evaluator at Lake Havasu, AZ (KHII) a few months back (most fun you can
have with your clothes on!)! I've also got a great support group with my
local EAA Chapter 1160 at Calvada! I've logged nearly 500 hours since
joining the world of GA flying.
When I bought "The Piety Project" as I affectionately refer to what will
ultimately be called "The Fabulous Princess Di" (after my Brit wife Diana).
The fuselage, landing gear, tail (elevator and rudder) and one wing was
essentially completed. I have since completed about 90-95% of the last wing
and only have the leading edge to shape and then attach the hardware. I hope
to hang the wings and run the control cables (when I return from an extended
overseas business trip in mid-August). The Piety Project came with a
Lycoming 290-G that was laying around the hanger which has had a major
overhaul (a topic for a separate post) and has recently had its first test
run. Tweaking a few things on the motor and then hope to hang it on the
fuselage by early September sporting an Insight G3 gauge to make sure I
don't mess up the good work on the overhaul! For all you "purists" cover
your eyes for the next bit. I plan to put on an electrical system (with
alternator) and have already installed LED lights for night flying. I will
also be installing the GTX345 (ADS-B in/out compliant) so I can fly into
controlled airspace after 2020 (I've already been from as far east as Fort
Worth to as far west as Sacramento in the other aircraft mentioned above)!
Still deciding on a radio/intercom system. I plan to use my iPhone 6 plus (a
my poor man's glass cockpit) with ForeFlight. It will still have a
needle/ball and round dial airspeed/altimeter! It has dual flight controls
and wire wheels. Hopefully that is enough to wet your whistles!
As I mentioned earlier, based on questions I had regarding the 290-G
conversion for aircraft use, I got connected with the Tailwind Forum on
Yahoo. Again.a long story about the 290-G conversion that I'll save for
another post (and yes I'm sure it will be too heavy and has way to much
power at 125hp). I plan to mount a Sensenich, 74" by 45" (pitch) wooden
prop on it! DOES THAT SOUND "about right"??? Soliciting inputs! If I can
learn as much from "real Pietenpol" builders and pilots from this forum as I
have learned about the 290-G from the Tailwind forum, I will be more than
ecstatic!!!
>From the small bit of info/background I have provided above I am guessing
some of you are cringing, some are laughing hysterically,, some are
intrigued, some are curious and most if not all want more info and will be
chomping at the bit with suggestions! I have only had the opportunity to see
one completed Pietenpol "in the flesh" at Fox Field (KWJF) in Lancaster, CA
and that is apparently a "hybrid" with Cub wings.
I hope to be undertaking taxi tests by October (but I have a tendency to be
overly optimistic!) and flights shortly thereafter. Bummed I missed the
West Coast event in June. That would have been an excellent opportunity to

I would not have been able to attend due to my current business travel.
Right now I have only been working on "The Piety Project" on weekends from a
shared, rented hanger, but with the recent install of a generator, lights
and a swamp cooler, I hope to "hit it hard" when I return. I'm looking
forward to the information I'm sure I will be able to glean from this forum
and look forward to chatting with, emailing and hopefully meeting many of
you in the next few weeks, months and years!
I hope to set up a separate blog site and YouTube channel and post photos
and videos there and here once I learn a bit more about how to navigate
around Matronics!
Cheers,
