This weekend I am starting my 4 hour trip to Columbia CA with 4 qts. I expect to put ten hours on the plane this weekend. I did put a separator on my plane. It helps a lot. It keeps the oil off of my bungee cords, making them last twice as long. My separator collects all the nasty stuff from the breather and retains it. I drain the moisture/oil from the separator about every ten hours. I elect not to send it back into the engine. Works great for me. -------- Scott Liefeld Flying N11MS since March 1972 Steel Tube C-85-12 Wire Wheels Brodhead in 1996 Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=458121#458121 ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 06:06:12 AM PST US From: "Douwe Blumberg" Subject: Pietenpol-List: Larry Morlock I'm trying to track down Larry Morlock. Do you have a pic or two of your oil separator that I may look at to copy your practice? It sounds like a great set up and worth the effort. Attached is a quick rough drawing. I built it out of Aluminum. It was my first attempt at making one. It has worked well enough that I haven't tried another version. I know it could be better but just haven't tried. Good luck with whatever you may try. The concept is a good one. I don't get much oil temperature to burn off the condensation in the oil tank. Therefore I don't want to route the liquid in the catch can back into the engine. On a 105F degree day I will see about 160F degrees oil temp after a long climb out. In the winter time, I am lucky to see the temp gauge raise off the peg, 140F degrees. However, I am surprised that your separator seals well enough to not leak, unless you have a gasket along the flanged face or you sealed it with something. Anyway, I may try something similar but I had not thought of just venting it under the cowl instead of running an "overflow" out the cowl somewhere. I'm tempted to go the Larry Williams route and find some sort of an old-timey can instead of trying to bend one up out of sheet. I may also place mine down low where I can drain it from the opening in the bottom of the cowl, like my gascolator and oil tank quick-drain. Very interesting about your oil temps. My A65 was more cold-blooded than the 75 is, and it stayed down around 140 most of the time, even in the hot Texas summer with two aboard. I worried about it being so cool, but I guess it wasn't. The A75 (which is still pretty tight, with not a lot of hours since complete overhaul to zero time) warms up to about 180 if I run it hard in hot weather, but it never gets above that. -------- Oscar Zuniga Medford, OR Air Camper NX41CC "Scout" A75 power, 72x36 Culver prop Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=458159#458159 ________________________________ Message 9 _____________________________________ Time: 09:22:35 PM PST US From: Steven Dortch Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Re: Don Youngblood Oscar, I know you meant an old timey oil collector. but could someone use an old fashoned Marvel Mystery Oil can? or something equally cool. It will also make non experimental people go bananas. -- Blue Skies, Steve D If that was not Off topic enough, I am in the middle of getting my instrument rating at Tempus training in San Marcos. They are affiliated with Redbird flight simulators. My training is about as far as you can get from a Pietenpol. New Cessna 172Ss with Garmin G1000 glass cockpits and full motion simulators. The sims are very good at making me feel like I am there. I loved learning to fly. But as far as Instrument training "I didn't like it So Much!" Not fun, watching the Lines and numbers all get out of bounds while I try to figure out how to intercept a radial and dial in the next Fix and Brief my approach and ... and...Crap I just blew through the intercept on the ILS approach. It is something I need to get done so that I can move on to Commercial and CFI. I want to teach flying as my followon career to the military.
