      Hi Jack=2C
      Thanks for the welcome!
Unfortunately=2C I'll still be overseas on business until mid-August so wil
l miss Brodhead and "the other" fly in this year! :-(
Copy on the instrumentation plan...after your reply I re-read and realized
my wording wasn't very clear. I'll still have a full suite of instruments..
.just hope to use ForeFlight as a "poor man's glass cockpit" as I like cros
      s country into Class-B airspace=2C so the ADS-B=2C radios and ForeFlight (v
ia an iPhone or mini-iPad) makes flight through busy airspace much more enj
oyable and stress-free (not to mention legal now and past 2020)!
I have several books (thanks for the additional suggestions) and my local a
ir patch buildrs/pilots and EAA Chapter have been VERY key in my building p
rogress so far! Great experience and lots of help and advice!
I'm about to "pull the trigger" on a Sensenich W74FM (46 pitch) wooden prop
(recommended for a PA-18...which I understand is a pretty close match). Ni
ce to know I'm getting good advice and that you agree with my choice!

Hi Ed=2C Welcome to the world of Pietenpols=2C and Pietenpeople! A couple o
f suggestions for you: If at all possible=2C try to come to Brodhead for th
e annual Pietenpol/Hatz fly-in. It will be in just a few weeks (July 21-23
) at C37=2C Brodhead Wisconsin (about 90 miles south of Oshkosh). There yo
u can see (and possibly get a ride in) up to two dozen different Pietenpols
. In additiona there are forums geared toward Pietenpol construction. Wel
l worth the trip=2C if you can make it=2C and it=92s right before that =93o
ther=94 fly-in in Wisconsin so you can see both on one trip. As for your in
strumentation plans=2C I doubt the FAA will grant an airworthiness certific
ate with your instrumentation being just an iPhone 6 and a couple of instru
ments. The regs require at a minimum that you have an altimeter=2C airspee
      d indicator=2C oil pressure=2C oil temperature=2C and a magnetic compass. B
efore Mike Cuy or someone else says it=2C I=92ll tell you to buy the Tony B
ingelis books: The Sportplane Builder=2C Sportplane Construction Techniques
=2C Firewall Forward=2C and Tony Bingelis on Engines. You can get them fro
m the EAA. Invaluable information for building a plane from scratch. As fo
r your prop selection=2C I wouldn=92t go by anything you read on the Tailwi
nd forum. A Pietenpol has a LOT more drag than a Tailwind and the airplane
=92s speed affects prop selection. Looking at Super Cubs (or Hatz Biplanes
) with O-290=92s would make more sense. Aircraft Spruce lists a Sensenich
wooden prop for an O-290 powered Super Cub as 74 x 49. Good to have you bui

Just a quick introduction to this Matronics Pietenpol family=85

My name is Ed Knouse=2C better known as =93KTOWN=94 to family and friends.
      I am a first-time=2C novice builder=2C who purchased a partially completed
Pietenpol Air Camper about a year ago. I=92m based out of Calvada Meadows (
NV74) in Pahrump=2C Nevada. I=92ve learned a great deal about Experimental
Amateur-Building in the past year with a very steep learning curve! I=92ve
already learned some valuable lessons the hard way as well! Until now I=92
ve only been following a =93Tailwind=94 forum on Yahoo (for reasons I=92ll
      explain later)!

I=92m a former Air Force pilot (F-16s=2C U-2s and C-12s among other trainin
g aircraft). I=92m fairly new to the GA world (just the last 3 years)...aga
      in a steep learning curve...flying C-172s and SR-20/22s (several =93flavors
      =94 of each)=2C C-206=2C the PAC-750 parachute plane on Sundays at Jean=2C
NV for fun and excitement (and to supplement my =93aircraft porn=94 addicti
on!) and I=92ve got about a half dozen landings in an RV-6! I=92ve had a f
ew =93trike=94 rides as well and hope to complete my checkout in a trike in
the next few months as time permits! I just completed my Single Engine Se
a rating with Mo Martin and evaluator at Lake Havasu=2C AZ (KHII) a few mon
ths back (most fun you can have with your clothes on!)! I=92ve also got a g
reat support group with my local EAA Chapter 1160 at Calvada! I've logged n
early 500 hours since joining the world of GA flying.

When I bought =93The Piety Project=94 as I affectionately refer to what wil
l ultimately be called =93The Fabulous Princess Di=94 (after my Brit wife D
iana). The fuselage=2C landing gear=2C tail (elevator and rudder) and one w
ing was essentially completed. I have since completed about 90-95% of the l
ast wing and only have the leading edge to shape and then attach the hardwa
re. I hope to hang the wings and run the control cables (when I return from
an extended overseas business trip in mid-August). The Piety Project came
with a Lycoming 290-G that was laying around the hanger which has had a maj
or overhaul (a topic for a separate post) and has recently had its first te
st run. Tweaking a few things on the motor and then hope to hang it on the
fuselage by early September sporting an Insight G3 gauge to make sure I do
n=92t mess up the good work on the overhaul! For all you =93purists=94 cove
r your eyes for the next bit. I plan to put on an electrical system (with a
lternator) and have already installed LED lights for night flying. I will a
lso be installing the GTX345 (ADS-B in/out compliant) so I can fly into con
trolled airspace after 2020 (I=92ve already been from as far east as Fort W
orth to as far west as Sacramento in the other aircraft mentioned above)! S
till deciding on a radio/intercom system. I plan to use my iPhone 6 plus (a
my poor man=92s glass cockpit) with ForeFlight. It will still have a needl
e/ball and round dial airspeed/altimeter! It has dual flight controls and w
ire wheels. Hopefully that is enough to wet your whistles!

As I mentioned earlier=2C based on questions I had regarding the 290-G conv
ersion for aircraft use=2C I got connected with the Tailwind Forum on Yahoo
. Again=85a long story about the 290-G conversion that I=92ll save for anot
her post (and yes I=92m sure it will be too heavy and has way to much power
       at 125hp). I plan to mount a Sensenich=2C 74" by 45" (pitch) wooden prop
on it! DOES THAT SOUND "about right"??? Soliciting inputs! If I can learn
as much from =93real Pietenpol=94 builders and pilots from this forum as I
have learned about the 290-G from the Tailwind forum=2C I will be more tha
      n ecstatic!!!

      >From the small bit of info/background I have provided above I am guessing s
ome of you are cringing=2C some are laughing hysterically=2C=2C some are in
trigued=2C some are curious and most if not all want more info and will be
chomping at the bit with suggestions! I have only had the opportunity to se
e one completed Pietenpol =93in the flesh=94 at Fox Field (KWJF) in Lancast
er=2C CA and that is apparently a =93hybrid=94 with Cub wings.

I hope to be undertaking taxi tests by October (but I have a tendency to be
overly optimistic!) and flights shortly thereafter. Bummed I missed the W
est Coast event in June. That would have been an excellent opportunity to l
earn tons of info and drool on your aircraft=2C but even had I known about
it I would not have been able to attend due to my current business travel.

Right now I have only been working on =93The Piety Project=94 on weekends f
rom a shared=2C rented hanger=2C but with the recent install of a generator
      =2C lights and a swamp cooler=2C I hope to =93hit it hard=94 when I return.
I=92m looking forward to the information I=92m sure I will be able to gle
an from this forum and look forward to chatting with=2C emailing and hopefu
lly meeting many of you in the next few weeks=2C months and years!

I hope to set up a separate blog site and YouTube channel and post photos a

      nd Matronics!

      Thanks Jack (Textor)!
      Sorry KDSM lost their Vipers.
If Jerry (Dotson) is on this list or anyone has his contact info and he doe
s have an O-290 (or equivalent) motor hanging off the front of his "Piet"
=2C I'd love to suck his brain of knowledge=2C especially with respect to W

be a bigger one than I anticipated)!

Welcome Ed=2C great summary! Looks like you are making great progress and
thank you so very much for your service. I miss the 16's we lost here in K
DSM. I could be wrong but I believe Jerry Dotson on this list has a simila

      Hi all=2C

I hope to set up a separate blog site and YouTube channel and post photos a
nd videos there and here once I learn a bit more about how to navigate arou
      nd Matronics!

      Oscar,

Like I said, It was a quick sketch. It is actually a welded up box made of two
pieces. The bottom, back and top is one piece bent in a C shape. The left side.
front face and right side is the second piece. The two pieces fit together
and are welded. It does not seal against the firewall. My drawing probably
      mis-lead you. Sorry about that.

Does this help to clarify the pic?

Scott: yes, you have made it very clear now how you built your separator. By any
chance did you bother to stuff it with Brillo pad or any sort of separation
      media?

Steve: the idea of using an old-timey "tin can" of some sort was exactly what I
meant. For example, you can see what Larry Williams used for his carb heat muff,

      Hi Oscar,

The old timey can Idea is a great one. Mine is under the cowl and can't be seen
so I did what I did.
I did not put anything inside of mine. A baffle or steel wool would probably make
it much more effective. I can only collect about enough liquid to fill a
cap from a Krylon paint can, before it starts to slobber a little. So, yes, I
believe that where your are headed with your question would be beneficial.

Like I said, mine is not near perfect, but works well enough for me to leave it
      alone.

| Subject: | Brodhead Bratfest Update |

      Piet friends,
Years ago wife Susan and I started hosting a brat lunch Friday noon at Brodhead.
We have enjoyed it so very much, meeting many friends and hearing so many stories.
People like Joe Swithin, Tom Kreiner and others have contributed fantastic
side dishes every year. Last year we donated $450 to Chapter 431 for memorial
bricks for two great aviators Vi Kapler and Dick Navratil. It's been
      a great ride!

Because the lunch has grown to such a large size I'm concerned that its competing
with the Chapter's food sales that Friday. They are so gracious hosting the
Piet/Hatz Fly-In I don't want to jeopardize that relationship or their profits.
So we won't be hosting a lunch this year. We can't thank everyone enough
for assisting and attending. We do look forward to new and lasting friendships
      developed every year at Brodhead.
      Thank you,
      Jack & Susan Textor

Howdy again, low 'n' slow fliers-

The EAA Chapter 292 and Independence Airpark (7S5) are hosting a fly-in this August
12-14. I think the Grumman Pilots Ass'n are also trying to get some Grummans
into the mix and nearby Van's Aircraft (Aurora, Oregon) will also be showing
up. There is information about the event here:

      http://www.eaa292.org/2016-independence-fly-in/

My interest in mentioning this is that the way I first got interested in the Pietenpol some 15 years ago was when I first laid eyes on Ernie Moreno's Aircamper. Ernie lives at the airpark and I took some photos and did a little writeup on his airplane after my visit, here: http://www.flysquirrel.net/piets/piets.html . As it turns out, I need to be in nearby Salem on the opening Friday of the fly-in, so I'm planning to make the attempt to fly my Piet up there to be there for the Saturday of the event. We'll see if my plans work out!

Will you be headed to 7S5 on Friday? Also, if you'd like I can drop a car off at
Salem for your use. It's a Taurus but a handy spare none the less. I can mail
you a set of keys if you'd like. I work four ten hour days and get Friday's
off so we could meet Friday too when you're done if you want
