Hi Jack=2C Thanks for the welcome! Unfortunately=2C I'll still be overseas on business until mid-August so wil l miss Brodhead and "the other" fly in this year! :-( Copy on the instrumentation plan...after your reply I re-read and realized my wording wasn't very clear. I'll still have a full suite of instruments.. .just hope to use ForeFlight as a "poor man's glass cockpit" as I like cros s country into Class-B airspace=2C so the ADS-B=2C radios and ForeFlight (v ia an iPhone or mini-iPad) makes flight through busy airspace much more enj oyable and stress-free (not to mention legal now and past 2020)! I have several books (thanks for the additional suggestions) and my local a ir patch buildrs/pilots and EAA Chapter have been VERY key in my building p rogress so far! Great experience and lots of help and advice! I'm about to "pull the trigger" on a Sensenich W74FM (46 pitch) wooden prop (recommended for a PA-18...which I understand is a pretty close match). Ni ce to know I'm getting good advice and that you agree with my choice! Hi Ed=2C Welcome to the world of Pietenpols=2C and Pietenpeople! A couple o f suggestions for you: If at all possible=2C try to come to Brodhead for th e annual Pietenpol/Hatz fly-in. It will be in just a few weeks (July 21-23 ) at C37=2C Brodhead Wisconsin (about 90 miles south of Oshkosh). There yo u can see (and possibly get a ride in) up to two dozen different Pietenpols . In additiona there are forums geared toward Pietenpol construction. Wel l worth the trip=2C if you can make it=2C and it=92s right before that =93o ther=94 fly-in in Wisconsin so you can see both on one trip. As for your in strumentation plans=2C I doubt the FAA will grant an airworthiness certific ate with your instrumentation being just an iPhone 6 and a couple of instru ments. The regs require at a minimum that you have an altimeter=2C airspee d indicator=2C oil pressure=2C oil temperature=2C and a magnetic compass. B efore Mike Cuy or someone else says it=2C I=92ll tell you to buy the Tony B ingelis books: The Sportplane Builder=2C Sportplane Construction Techniques =2C Firewall Forward=2C and Tony Bingelis on Engines. You can get them fro m the EAA. Invaluable information for building a plane from scratch. As fo r your prop selection=2C I wouldn=92t go by anything you read on the Tailwi nd forum. A Pietenpol has a LOT more drag than a Tailwind and the airplane =92s speed affects prop selection. Looking at Super Cubs (or Hatz Biplanes ) with O-290=92s would make more sense. Aircraft Spruce lists a Sensenich wooden prop for an O-290 powered Super Cub as 74 x 49. Good to have you bui lding a Pietenpol! The Piety Project came with a Lycoming 290-G that was laying around the hanger which has had a maj or overhaul (a topic for a separate post) and has recently had its first te st run. Mine is under the cowl and can't be seen so I did what I did. I did not put anything inside of mine. A baffle or steel wool would probably make it much more effective. I can only collect about enough liquid to fill a cap from a Krylon paint can, before it starts to slobber a little. So, yes, I believe that where your are headed with your question would be beneficial. Like I said, mine is not near perfect, but works well enough for me to leave it alone. -------- Scott Liefeld Flying N11MS since March 1972 Steel Tube C-85-12 Wire Wheels Brodhead in 1996 Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=458176#458176 ________________________________ Message 10 ____________________________________ Time: 01:18:53 PM PST US Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: "The Piety Project" ...new member to this forum! We have enjoyed it so very much, meeting many friends and hearing so many stories. People like Joe Swithin, Tom Kreiner and others have contributed fantastic side dishes every year. Last year we donated $450 to Chapter 431 for memorial bricks for two great aviators Vi Kapler and Dick Navratil. It's been a great ride! Because the lunch has grown to such a large size I'm concerned that its competing with the Chapter's food sales that Friday. They are so gracious hosting the Piet/Hatz Fly-In I don't want to jeopardize that relationship or their profits. So we won't be hosting a lunch this year. We can't thank everyone enough for assisting and attending. We do look forward to new and lasting friendships developed every year at Brodhead. I think the Grumman Pilots Ass'n are also trying to get some Grummans into the mix and nearby Van's Aircraft (Aurora, Oregon) will also be showing up. There is information about the event here: http://www.eaa292.org/2016-independence-fly-in/ My interest in mentioning this is that the way I first got interested in the Pietenpol some 15 years ago was when I first laid eyes on Ernie Moreno's Aircamper. Ernie lives at the airpark and I took some photos and did a little writeup on his airplane after my visit, here: http://www.flysquirrel.net/piets/piets.html . As it turns out, I need to be in nearby Salem on the opening Friday of the fly-in, so I'm planning to make the attempt to fly my Piet up there to be there for the Saturday of the event. We'll see if my plans work out! -------- Oscar Zuniga Medford, OR Air Camper NX41CC "Scout" A75 power, 72x36 Culver prop Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=458209#458209 ________________________________ Message 14 ____________________________________ Time: 09:29:59 PM PST US Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Re: Don Youngblood From: Steven Dortch Yahoo!
