I have not posted any progress for a long while. This doesn't mean that I wasn't
active. Fuselage is on its wheels now, almost finished with the turtledeck,
I finished the wing spars, they are plywood/wood, some of the cabane struts and
lift struts are finished, some still wait to be shaped. Thet are all plywood,
carbon, wood. It is not that I don't like aluminum or steel, the reason is they
are simply not available here. I also designed a tailwheel with angle release.
I didn't make it yet. In a few weeks, I am hoping to put the wings together.
Ribs were ready years ago.
Engine: C90-8F. I had an A65-8 originally. A few months ago I found a C90-8F from
a junkyard. Bought it and started working on it. I completely disassembled
and cleaned whatever came. Now I am at the stage of putting it together. I weighed
the conrods and found differences as much as 1/3 ounces on the opposing ones
(ie. 1-2 and 3-4). I balanced them down to 0.01 grams (0.00035 ounces). I
will do the same for the pistons and hope for an engine with less vibration. I
will not use shellack on the crankcase. I will use Loctite 518. I will also use
the silk thread. I made two test pieces, one with shellack and one with Loctite,
definitely Loctite is better. Bad luck, it wasn't available 70 years ago.
I also made a jig for the engine mount. I made the parts and cut the tubing.
I hope to start next week.

Semih; as usual, your workmanship looks very pleasing in all respects. It will
be a beautiful airplane. As for shellac, the oil gallery plugs on the front
of my engine were installed with shellac as per the Continental manual and at
the annual inspection I found one of them weeping oil just a bit and the other
one not tight in its threads. As to using Loctite on the case seam, I am not
an A&P and do not know what constitutes acceptable methods, but I'm with you...
we have far better materials available today than shellac.
I am very grieved to hear of recent disturbances and unrest in Turkey. My wife
and I have visited various ports and cities in your country several times and
we always found the people to be hospitable to us. We are sorry that tourist
travel to Turkey is presently not recommended due to the unrest.

Just got my copy of the Brodhead Pietenpol Association newsletter in the mail today.
Wow-! Jack Phillips put together a really nice compilation of common changes
to the Air Camper design... subtitled "To Change Or Not To Change?"
Nice job, Jack!
Also a beautiful cover photo and centerfold of Bob Coolbaugh's "New Piet", Two-Two-Victor-Yankee.
Very striking and nostalgic color scheme, and he sure isn't
going to lose it in the parking lot!
