So Bill,
You're on the right track. My hope was that by having the fuselage on the
side of the wall the air would bubble out of the brake lines on its own.
If that doesn't do it, it may be necessary to work on it while standing
inverted from the ceiling. Maybe I'll try that in the next picture I
attach to an email.

You're welcome Jim, and Jeff. If you had to miss one, this year's weather helped
make it one to miss. It was still a great time of course, fun and fellowship
had despite the heat, but we could have done with a break from our deep South
summer up North. :-)

Obviously a beginners question but what is most prevalent when it comes to airspeed

I live in the Blue Ridge mountains in Virginia. A straight line between
here and Brodhead requires climbing to 6500=99, which I=99ve
done on many occasions. It takes a while.
I have my airspeed in mph and a 0-10,000=99 altimeter.

Are you asking what=99s more common, or what=99s more
useful? In a Piet, I like MPH and 0-5,500 ft. The number of
time=99s I=99ve had my Piet about 5,000 ft is 1. OTOH, if
you live out west, maybe a 10k altimeter is needed.

John, I was checking the pitot system and the front and rear read
different! I checked fittings and seals. Then I realized the front is in
mph and the rear in knots.
"Steve, what was your solution?" You ask.
I just created different V speeds for each cockpit. It will fly faster
from the front cockpit!
I prefer mph because it sounds much less slow.
Pick what you like!

Hi Pieters and greetings from Tasmania,
I started my subscription to this forum a few years back and kept my
head down during the =91flame wars=92, not wishing to appear stupid
asking questions that had probably been asked many times before. I think
the tone of the forum has been very positive in the past 18 months or
so, and I look forward to reading the days digest of posts each evening.
This is where I am currently at:
I have completed all the wing ribs and both sides of the fuselage. I am
presently connecting the two fuselage sides. It=92s winter here, so
working in the shed is limited to short bursts.
I=92m using a Ford engine and it is currently being re-furbished by a
local machinist with considerable experience with old Ford engines. The
bore needs to come out 60 thou and the crankshaft has gone 20 thou over.
On inspection it was found that one of the original babbit main bearings
was damaged. Overhauling it would have meant re-pouring and line
drilling the babbits, a very costly procedure (but one he recently
carried out for a mate rebuilding a T-Ford). My mate (a T and A Ford man
for over 60 years) advised against re-babbiting due to the cost and also
the fact that Ford originally used a tin based babbit metal, whereas the
babbit material supplied these days is lead based and vastly inferior
(according to my learned friend).
Consequently, I have had the block machined to take insert bearings.
Costly, but I can re-furbish the engine easily in the future if needed.
The plans show the tachometer drive coming off the front of the
camshaft. By my calculation this would require a pretty long drive shaft
to the gauge. Question to those running Ford motors: have any of you
taken the drive from elsewhere ( I was thinking maybe off the redundant
distributor drive)?
The other question I have regarding the Ford motor is the temperature
gauge. My 1927 Overland Whippet was like the A Fords; the temperature
gauge was a Boyce Motometer stuck in the radiator cap. Can=92t see that
would be practical in the Piet (for one thing, you would have to stand
up to read it), so I wonder how and what type of sensor is used. Some
have a resistance type sensor which require a power source.
Many thanks, and the forum lives on. As Mark Twain said =93The report of
my death was an exaggeration=94.
Respectfully,
David Boarder

Sounds like great progress.
My buddy has an Overland Whippet dismantled in preparation for restoration.
The engine is an obvious parent to the WW2 jeep motor. More Whippets were
exported than kept here

Every airplane I've flown, from the Fleet 80 Canuck in 62 through

that to
look faster. :-)
It won't matter so long as your V numbers are the same.
