Thanks Jim. I had sent a prior email about my Piet which appears to not
have gone through. I will re-send it.

Just to fill you in. I have flown the Piet from the front with Leigh
Smith guiding me from the rear. Last Monday I started flying from the
rear with Leigh in the front. Yesterday I started flying it by myself.
The plane performs flawlessly as does the engine. I probably have 6+
flight hours now without a hiccup. The engine purrs along with amazing
power. My empty weight was 750 pounds. With Leigh Smith at 216, me at
176 and 72 # of fuel (12 gal) we were at 1,214 # gross. Pretty hefty for
a Piet. I had arbitrarly set my gross at 1200#. It just that it worked
out to be 1200# with me plus normal fuel and a 200# passenger. I thought
I neverwould get a passenger more than 200 in the front.....Wrong! Even
on an 80 deg. day we climed out at 400 ft/min at 60 mph at over gross.

Hope all is well with you and Dee.

I will get the minutes to you soon. As usual Dave Boast ran the meeting
and as usual it was a joke. About all that can be said is we had a
meeting, 15 people showed up. I gave a treasurer's report and thats it.

      Regards,

      Rick

| Subject: | Corvair Piet performance report |

The list has been slow lately and I haven't posted much for a while so I
      thought I would report in.

After getting my taiwheel endorsement, I was able to start flying
NX48RS. I had the Piet ferried from my home airport - Porter Co.
Regional (VPZ) with lots of traffic and long hard surface runways, to
Starke Co. (OXI) with little traffic and both grass and hard surface.
I have been flying mostly off the grass and having lots of fun. I have a
number of hours on the Piet and a few dozen landings. So far all is good
with the engine and the plane.

For those that don't know or remember here are the specs on the engine
      and plane.

        * I have a standard 2700 cc Corvair engine for power
        * 68" x 34 pitch cloudcars prop (same prop that Kevin Purtee uses)||
        * 18 gal nose tank
        * Straight axle Jenny style gear
        * empty weight a hefty 758 #

      Here are some performance specs....

        * WOT on climb out 2675 rpm
        * climb out speed 60 mph
        * 700 ft / min on climb out with OAT at 71 deg. I weigh 175# but my
instructor also flew 478RS and saw the same climb rate, he weighs
216#. Kevin reported the same climb with his corvair powered piet.
        * WOT max rpm in level flight 2800 rpm which yields 85-90 mph (maybe
          even 95)
        * 2700 rpm = about 75 mph
        * 2400 rpm = around 70 mph ( I think)
        * fuel burn 5 gph, using 100LL avgas

hot oil pressure at cruise is about 40#. Initially the oil temperature
was steady at about 190 degrees, but has now dropped to 180. This is
probably due to the engine starting to break in.

Yesterday I managed to get in a little sightseeing rather than just
landing practice. Got the Piet up to 2500 AGL to see how it would feel.
No issues with feeling frail in such a craft, though I admit its more
fun to fly down low. So far I am really happy with the Piet and the
engine. I plan on flying again this afternoon and tomorrow and the next
      day.........

No surprises in flying other than the amount of left rudder needed to
counter P factor on takeoff. Once the throttle is reduced to cruise, the
rudder is pretty much neutral. I *did not* offset the vertical stab. I
do have to hold some constant back pressure on the stick. I have checked
the elevators and the horizontal stab and all is good. I may just use a
bungee to put in the required back pressure, either on the stick itself
      or on the walking beam.

3rd move in 3 years. ugh. too long of a story. the one good thing is that I get
to see "superpiet" in the light of day. my smart phone pics while in the garage
are not very good. landing gear is pretty much done but had to remove it to
fit in the trailer. sorry to my pietvair brothers. was having problems posting
      pics from my phone.

Rick; that's great performance for a Piet. And I agree about how much more enjoyable
it is flying these airplanes off of grass or dirt than hard surface. I
really like the paint job... having been based just a short hop from Kelly Field
for nine years, and having always had Air Force family in and around Kelly,
is even more reason to like your paint scheme. Now you've just got to try an
early morning strafing run on an enemy supply train trying to run for the border
      ;o)

Wow. Wow-! Now that's a one-of-a-kind! Enclosed cockpit, canopy... nice! What
do you plan to power it with? A Warner Scarab radial?

Ditto on the military paint job. I hope to be flying mine in the next 3
      months or so.

In that vein, tonight I am staying at a friend's house on Fort Sam Houston
about a quarter mile from where Lieutenant Benjamin Foulous conducted the
first US Army flights in a Wright biplane on March 2nd 1910. This is
considered the beginning of US military aviation.

The parade grounds here are in the shape of a reverse L. While they are
currently used as physical fitness fields, they were laid out as runways.
