Word has it that Kevin "Axel" Purtee has the new iteration of his Air Campe
r up and flying. If anyone (Terry-?) has first flight reports from Kevin,
can you cut and paste so the rest of us can enjoy his return to Pietenpolin
g? It's been a labor of love and I know we've all wanted to see him get "R
osie" flying. Kevin does excellent work and he and Shelley are such great
examples of why we enjoy the world of Air Campers. Unselfish, great attitu
de, dedicated builder, and of course he is a decorated combat helicopter pi
lot as well.

Subject: | two more test flights |
Just a little up-date on my aircraft.
I was disappointed in the first flight and felt that without some extra power
I would never feel comfortable flying the Jeep powered Pietenpol.
A couple of years ago when I was contemplating the size of propeller I would
need for this engine, I sent a private message to William Wynne and asked him
his opinion. He Graciously gave me what he figured would be the size and pitch
prop I should try. He advised me to use a 63x32 prop. When I gave me the
data he told me not to be shocked at the short length , and that he thought that
it would be close. Well he was right , I built the first prop exactly 63x32
and was able to make 2300 static rpms. After my first Taxi accident and
ground-loop which busted that prop, I decided to build another the same pitch
but 3 inches longer. That propeller dropped my static rpm to 2000 and caused
me to have the weak performance.
I have since shortened and also thinned somewhat the blades, though I am still
at 64 inch length. My Test flights today confirmed that Mr Wynne had the
length spot on because my flight performance was much better and I got my
2300 hundred back in flight.

Kenny; I'm late, but I wanted to add my name to the list of people congratulating
you on completing and flying your Jeepenpol. I remember sitting right here
at my computer what seems like not that long ago, watching the YouTube videos
of you prop-starting the engine on the test stand in your shop. You pulled it
through so many times I wanted to tell you to stop trying and check it over
to see what's not right, but next thing you know, it fired and ran. Sounded great,
too. You need to do a video with sound, and get up close to the idling
engine going pocketa-pocketa out those short stacks.
Must be some good things in Arkansas. That's where my old instructor, Charlie
Avaritt, is from. He's the guy who ferried 41CC from Shreveport to my hometown
of Laredo, Texas when I bought it from Corky, and he's the guy who gave me my
checkout in the airplane. He, too, was an aerial applicator back in the day
when they loaded the hopper bare-handed and didn't worry about handling or storing
the stuff that went into the hopper. When you could still buy something
that would take care of fire ants ;o) Charlie flew a Bellanca Scout in a movie
where the air work was shot in Laredo back when I was working on my Private
with him, and the airplane was painted to look like a Border Patrol airplane
(pale green and white, with the big gold Border Patrol logo on the tail). He
flew some chase scenes in the movie, which I think was "The Border" but I'm not
sure, and when he was training for it, he took me up in the Bellanca and showed
me a few moves. One was the old "skipping the tires on the river" trick,
but the one I really liked was where he flew the plane right down on the deck
(the Rio Grande River) straight for a high embankment at a sharp bend in the
river. At the last minute, he pulled it steeply up and over the embankment, did
a duster turn at the top, and then dropped it right back down to complete a
180 headed back the other way. The steep drop back down to the river put us
in slightly negative G with me pulling against the shoulder harness towards the
airplane's greenhouse panel in the roof. Exhilarating ;o) Sorry for the detour
to tell a story, but the bottom line is that I've never met an Arkansas crop
duster that I didn't like ;o) Congratulations again on getting your unique
Air Camper flying! Keep those flight test reports coming.
