| Subject: | Wood Gear Bungee |

I now have 20 hrs and dozens of landings in my wood gear, straight axle Piet. So
far I have not trimmed my bungees to the final length until I was sure I had
the tension right. All seems fine, except for my landing experience [Laughing]
My question is about the clamps for the bungee wraps. I know some have used
hose clamps, some use safety wire, some steel panduit cable ties and finally plastic
cable ties. Currently I am using 4 plastic cable ties on each side. I was
going to just do this temporarily, but they do seem to be holding OK. What
is the consensus? Will the plastic cable ties hold up OK, especially if the bungees
and clamps are replaced every 2 or 3 years

Rick, my knowledge/experience common harbor freight/AutoZone/army supply
zip ties/cable ties is that they get brittle fast with sun exposure. They
also get brittle with heat and time. When they get stiff and brittle, they
snap with no warning. There are higher quality uv resistant ties. Also, if
you cover them they will last longer. I would use them and replace them at
the first sign of getting brittle. But maybe use two and stagger when y
      replace them.

      Rick,

I personally do not trust the plastic ties. They will and do break. I would use
a metal device of your choice to secure the bungees. Having a bungee come
unwrapped at the wrong time could be very costly and painful.

My three cents, Now what do others think?

I'm with Scott. The cable ties will fail. I use hose clamps, but they are ugly.
A more vintage look would be stainless safety wire. Hog rings would be fine
      too.

      Tools

Who just put on a fourth set of bungees. I'm coming to the conclusion that every
year is not too often. I've gotten to where it only takes 45 minutes start
to finish. I think a spreader of some sort, like dan helsper has, would increase
      life dramatically.
