    Subject: wood gear bungee
My experience seems to have been different from everyone else's. I've been flying for four years using the large plastic zip-ties that are sold for heating/ac duct work. they are really huge and you need a special tool to ratchet them up tight. I'm replacing my bungees this year only because I'm replacing my axle. Upon removal, they all look in excellent condition and none have loosened. I have four of the ties on each "end" of the bungee and I simply cannot see all four breaking at once. This should be a routine part of your inspection, regardless of how you fix your bungees in place, so if one or even two gave out, you should see it. Regarding plastic degrading in sunlight, let's be realistic here. In theory this is a valid point, but in my opinion a moot point in this regard. I don't know of a single piet that is hangared outdoors, and when they ARE outdoors for extended periods of time (maybe three days at Brodhead?) the number of hours the sun is getting past the fuselage and wheels to actually bath the zip ties on the bungies in UV is pretty minimal. I would NOT use regular zip ties, but my experience is the big ones work fine. As do the other techniques mentioned, including a few not mentioned. $.02 Douwe

    From: "pjb" <pjb@ornithopter-pilot.com>
Hello Everyone, My Pietenpol made it's first 2 flights on Oct 31. We spent the summer replacing the Continental A75 with a Continental 0-200 + electrical system. The 0-200 has completely corrected the aft cg problem [which is why I installed it] and now I have a large, magnificent starter button as well !! We were able to use the prop that was on the A75 [Cloudcars, wood, 74 X 38] but had to counterbore it for the 0-200. It gives full throttle static RPM 2500 and just on the redline 2750 in full throttle level flight. Douwe brings up a couple of really good points. First, there really is a wide rage of quality in cable ties. And in this application the quality equates to longevity. I think they are all adequate for the job, just that cheap ones degrade too fast. Until the point of failure, they all seem to hold just fine if properly tightened. Cheap ties seem to get awful brittle with mere oxidation, as evidenced by my breaking by hand old ones I've dug up in the toolbox... Insofar as my bungees, the mode of failure seems to be pinching. That's why I mentioned dans spreaders. Do you have something similar Douwe? I'm going to fabricate some and install them. Also, 2rn flies a lot, with a lot of landing cycles, off VERY rough fields. Douwe seems to be enamored with those Air Force style soft squishy landings! Food for thought. I've considered installing a cable tie between "turns" of the bungee wrap, essentially making three or four separate loops. One failing doesn't equal disaster. Second, when I replaced my bungees two years ago, one side turned out to be cut through to about a mere dozen strands of rubber. Probably less than ten percent intact? Yikes. Pretty sure it had been that way for longer than I care to think about. Replaced them "just because". Had no clue it was that bad. This year, I merely pulled the ends out of the hose clamps on one side... In neither cae was the plane handling poorly nor was the problem really visible. About any regular maintenance will keep them operating correctly. They are not a normal failure point or a hyper critical item in terms of having to be installed perfectly or else. I do have safety straps. Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=462446#462446
