Subject: | Re: lamintated spar |
this is how I did my center section spars. I used doug fur,but the grain was running
the wrong way so I cut 5/8 wide strips and epoxied them atop eachother.
then I planed the new board down to 3/8 inch and laminated on 1/8 okume ply on
each side and lastly epoxied rails to make an I beam of 1inch wide along the
rails and 5/8 in the web. I didnt put stiffeners behind each rib attach location
for the center section but will be doing so for the left and right wing.

A suggestion would be to make a new motor mount that would be longer so you would
move the weight of the engine and prop forward to help you weight and balance???
This way you don't add that much weight to the plane.
Now maybe that is not a good idea? I have heard of others who had other designs
who did this to help weight and balance.

Mike,
You are absolutely correct. The problem with that is removing the engine, the making
of the mount, re-installing the engine, building a new cowling and painting
it. I am moving the wing back and checking on using a metal prop. Moving the
wing does the most good, even more than the motor mount....especially considering
the amount of work involved. All the calculations have been kinda fun.
Especially with Scott Liefeld's generous help and his putting me on the right
path.
But building a Piet is a journey to be enjoyed and not to rushed. I may end up
doing all of the above! It's too cold to fly it this time of the year, anyway!
And if I can't shake this lousy cold, I might lose ten lbs. off my butt?
Thanks for your suggestions....build'em light!
