I bought an older, says Mark 8, compass, WW2 navy area?
Anyway I checked it against our sight compass at work and it works great!
The only problem is that the liquid has become dark and the lettering is also very
dark.
What would be involved in refurbishing this thing? Do I need to send this in somewhere,
or would it is possible to replace the liquid and clean up the lettering?

If this is the sperry (bulkhead mount) compass of which you speak, the dial
will be painted in radium paint, which does "fade" but is still poisonous
(radioactive). (Pretty much most to all of the instruments of this era will
be radium painted.)
I have replaced "dirty" compass fluid with the best kerosene I could find (
not lamp oil) but was informed once by a service tech that the reason for t
he discolouration is from the seals breaking down. I always assumed it was
from the paint. I have never had a leak but I would not rely on one of my c
ollectibles as a primary instrument. But, Hey. Get a removable phone mount
and use your iPhone for that.
The story of the girls who worked in factories during WWII painting radium
dials is interesting. They were told it was safe and used to lick their bru
shes, as per training, to get a good point. A goodly number of them lost th
eir jaws, etc. to cancer. No claims were ever paid out as I recall.
There are instrument makers who will be happy to repair the unit for the pr
ice of a mortgage payment. I had a watchmaker who painted dials for me (now
passed on) but I never wanted to disassemble a liquid filled instrument fo
r fear of not ever being able to seal it back up.

Anything is possible! This is Experimental Aviation. Look the thing up
online and perhaps you can find a good description of an overhaul!
First can you get Seals? Or can you make them?
The famous 'Whisky" in these old compasses is usually a really pure
kerosene. So you will need paint that will resist kerosene.
I have an old Carwil compass that became the early Airpath compass. To
adjust the heading you have to place magnetized needles in little slots on
the compass. Really strange. I got it up and working but now have a small
leak, guess it is time to replace the seals. Luckily they are just like the
airpath Seals.

I thought that radium paint also ment glow in the dark?
This doesn't glow.
In any case it is a panel mount, and I got it for pretty inexpensive.
I love it though for the large dial in there!

Instrument Pro in California does a great job with restoring older instruments.
Kurt Steklis is a magician! His email is instrumentpro@yahoo.com
Tell him we sent you - he's already done a handful of instruments for us with our
Camel project
Cheers

Subject: | new aluminum high compression head for the Jeep engine |
I had done some internet research in the past to find an aluminum head for my Jeep
134 engine the would do two things , increase hp and weigh less.
I found that there were such animals but not many around any more. Hickey had
made these in the 50's for midget racers of that era, but they were scarce
and expensive. I did find that a fellow in Austrailia had built his version
of aluminum head and according to a few years older add , they were soon to be
back in production. I contacted the man and he seemed interested in providing
me with such a head , but about that time he became ill and being like me an
older fellow I wasn't sure that he would ever be able to complete the project.
About a year ago I received an email from Ted that said He had been sick
but thought he was improving and that he had about 4 different people wanting
the head and he was going to check his supply of castings and try to build them
. I received a message from him and a picture of my head almost ready. Shipping
next week hopefully.
