    Hi Bruce - Welcome to the Pietenpol! I am still a builder and a frustrated pilot. If you do chose to build, it has to be the journey you enjoy, not only the destination. I think you will find the engine no more daunting than any of the other aspects of the build; it is just one more thing to learn, or learn more about. Sounds like you have the perfect plan - living on an airport and flying when you like, while building your dream. Go for it!
