Maybe no one has asked you, but I thought that I should - 1. Is that solid tubing line shown arcing down your actual fuel line, or is that temporary set up? In the event of an off-field landing, I am concerned that the line as built will fail, showering any front seat passenger with fuel. What are your thoughts on that? 2. Have you done at least a preliminary weight and balance? Your cabanes appear to be vertical, with a lighter Continental engine. That combination typically puts a pilot at or beyond the aft CG limit of 20 inches that Bernard Pietenpol himself said was the furthest aft the CG should ever be. 3. Where is the center of your axle in relation to the datum (the leading edge)? I can't really tell from the photo. 4. Have you considered the strength of your diagonal cabanes in the event of the possible off-field landing I mentioned earlier? They don't appear to be strong enough to survive the force of an off-field landing and they could collapse much like William Wynne's aircraft did at the time of his accident. https://flycorvair.net/2013/12/19/pietenpol-fuel-lines-and-cabanes/ https://flycorvair.net/2013/12/20/fuel-lines-and-cabanes-part-2/ I hope that you will take the questions in the spirit that they are given. Your craftsmanship is very good. I am just wondering if you have looked at worst case scenarios in some of your design decisions. -------- Semper Fi, Terry Hand Athens, GA Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=489801#489801 ________________________________ Message 5 _____________________________________ Time: 06:51:34 AM PST US From: Glen Schweizer Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Basho-journey Beautiful prop. By the question is the same - has a good weight and balance been done? The other questions still stand, regardless of power plant. -------- Semper Fi, Terry Hand Athens, GA Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=489816#489816 ________________________________ Message 9 _____________________________________ Time: 08:38:42 PM PST US Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Ragwing Ultra-Piet From: "cdlwingnut" i opened up the can of varnish and put a coat on the upper part of the center section and the inside of the leading edge plywood piece that has been clamped to the leading edge to form. Or, if you want to learn about tools and techniques and a bit about philosophy and life, take the time to go through the build photos and narratives that Clif has generously and thoughtfully shared with the world on his website, here- http://www.clifdawson.ca/Homepage4-10-06/Pietenpol.html . The engine is a Lycoming O-290, and knowing Clif, my guess is that it's placed right where he wants it. -------- Oscar Zuniga Medford, OR Air Camper NX41CC "Scout" A75 power, 72x36 Culver prop Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=489819#489819 ________________________________ Message 11 ____________________________________ Time: 09:26:35 PM PST US From: "Clif Dawson" Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Re: Basho-journey Ah, Boys, yes they do. So, That thing is an O-290. It weighs pretty damn close to the original model A when you add in water and radiator. The preliminary W&B, with my weight and calculated fabric and paint weight and location factored in I'm looking at a CG of 18". Passenger and fuel hardly matter as they're both so close to the CG, less than another half inch. If I REALLY wanted to it would be nothing to push the wing back a half inch or so. Now, the fuel line. Why did I route it in that straight, gentle curve from the tank to the mounting bracket just inside the engine cowl? Well, I did read William's account when he first wrote it. If I was to encounter that brick wall scenario and the wing did collapse foreward that soft line will "roll" and bend foreward without breaking or rupturing except possibly at the support foreward of the firewall. Also the fuel tank shut off is just above the windscreen with a really big knob staring right at me in easy reach without even leaning foreward. Would I not reach for that as soon as the big cooling fan quit turning and I'd exhausted all the restart options? Assuming I'm in the pilots seat unlike William. The foreward diagonals have been geometrically designed to direct any collapsing force right down the center line of the tubes and all three bolt connections. Those tubes are heavy walled as well. Again, thought out after that nose dive. It would be somewhat difficult to weld the wood cabanes. :-) Clif > > > Tom, > > Okay, I stand corrected.
