Mike; my Air Camper has a Narco ELT, I believe it's the ELT-10, 121.5 Mhz only,
one of the simplest and most ubiquitous ELTs from days gone by. It has its own
little fold-out antenna so it could ostensibly be removed from the airplane
after a crash and used as a personal-carry locator with the antenna extended.
The battery has a mandatory 2-yr replacement and a battery costs $34.50 from
Chief Aircraft and others. I test it regularly and it works, but I have as much
expectation of anyone ever locating it or my downed aircraft as I do of winning
the Powerball this Saturday. I installed it and maintain it on the aircraft
to meet the requirement that an operational ELT be carried onboard my 2-place
aircraft. I don't believe that an ELT is required for single-place aircraft
      like the Sky Scout.

When I got 41CC, Corky had the ELT installed on the floorboard all the way up between
the passenger's rudder pedals, and from every recommendation that I've
ever seen, that is not a good location. Best location is behind the rear seat
in the empennage, securely mounted to the structure, so that's where I moved
it to after my airplane went over on its nose and I had to rebuild things. I
mounted a flat piece of aluminum on the bottom inside the empennage where I can
inspect it and reach the test switch by opening the access door in the headrest
area, and then mounted a fixed ELT whip antenna to that ground plane and connected
the ELT using the BNC connector and a short piece of coax. My understanding
is that the tailcone of an aircraft usually stays intact in a crash even
thought the firewall forward, cockpit, wings, and gear may not. Also, an engine
fire is not as likely to spread to the tailcone. Or so they say.

I found that the original ELT in the airplane wouldn't have activated in the nose-over
anyway... battery corrosion had eaten up a lot of the electronics and
battery terminals inside it when I opened it to inspect why it hadn't gone off.
It looked good on the outside, but did nothing useful. I suppose if you want
an ELT that will actually do some good locating your downed airplane, you should
get one that works on 406Mhz where the satellites are listening. Nobody
      listens to 121.5 anymore.
