Thank you Oscar. I want something cheap to meet the requirements...I plan
to also have on me a personal locating beacon if venturing a way from my ho

It has its own little fold-out antenna so it could ostensibly be removed fr

battery costs $34.50 from Chief Aircraft and others.=C2- I test it regul

that an operational ELT be carried onboard my 2-place aircraft.=C2- I don
't believe that an ELT is required for single-place aircraft like the Sky S
cout.
When I got 41CC, Corky had the ELT installed on the floorboard all the way
up between the passenger's rudder pedals, and from every recommendation tha

side the empennage where I can inspect it and reach the test switch by open
ing the access door in the headrest area, and then mounted a fixed ELT whip
antenna to that ground plane and connected the ELT using the BNC connector
and a short piece of coax.=C2- My understanding is that the tailcone of
an aircraft usually stays intact in a crash even thought the firewall forwa
rd, cockpit, wings, and gear may not.=C2- Also, an engine fire is not as
likely to spread to the tailcone.=C2- Or so they say.
I found that the original ELT in the airplane wouldn't have activated in th
e nose-over anyway... battery corrosion had eaten up a lot of the electroni
cs and battery terminals inside it when I opened it to inspect why it hadn'
t gone off.=C2- It looked good on the outside, but did nothing useful.=C2
- I suppose if you want an ELT that will actually do some good locating y
our downed airplane, you should get one that works on 406Mhz where the sate
llites are listening.=C2- Nobody listens to 121.5 anymore.

Subject: | Re: ELT Recommendation |
Mike, you might touch base with a DAR in your area before you buy a 121.5
ELT. My understanding is that the FAA no longer permits a signoff on new
installations of those.
Besides, if you ever do end up in a situation where the ELT could save your
life, having one that can actually help do that may seem like a pretty good
investment. You might not be able to reach or activate a PLB.
I've had something like that experience.
Here's the short version of the story. Four years ago, after my engine quit
in flight, I landed in a cornfield and came to rest upside down. Within a
minute or two, I received a call from the ELT folks checking on the status
of my airplane and me. They knew precisely my location. In fact, I had
just started inspecting the damage when the call came in. As it happens, I
was unhurt. So in this instance, I suppose it didn't matter that I had a
new style 406 ELT. But the value of one became very clear. Now, I
wouldn't fly without it.
Cheers, Ken

the middle piece of plywood is cut, soaked and clamped onto the leading edge to
form. I messed one piece up by cutting it too short so now have to order another
piece. I did some more varnishing as well

The rule was implemented Jan. 11 of this year but with a 6-month transition period
so that vendors could deplete their inventory. After that expires (soon-!),
the manufacture, importation, or sale of 121.5 Mhz ELTs will be prohibited.
