    Subject: Water No 2
--> Piper-List message posted by: RFG842@aol.com Got several replies on my original message so will answer all on the digest. What I called the "pencil" sump tester is the one with the serrated top and the screwdriver on the bottom. Have carried one for years but at the AI pointed out, doesn't drain much gas. Why we got gas and not water until a larger sample was taken, I don't know. One fellow suggested that we got all water, did not see or smell the sample, and so ignored the result. Got my ticket in 1946 and a couple of tricks I was taught was to shake the airplane a little so the water drained to the sumps. All gas tanks are not created equal. Also when you pour the sample on concrete, the gasoline evaporates quickly while water leaves a longer, timed stain. Guess what the final answer is that you can always learn and although you try to do everything right, expect the unexpected. That's what flying is all about. My son did a great job, kept the nose straight ahead, didn't get flustered and planned his touchdown perfectly. Little hard to get back in the plane after inspection and fly it to home base, but he learned a lesson he's not likely to forget for a while. Bob PS: End of subject
