I bought a 1958 PA-22-160 my senior year in High School and my dad and I changed the bungies as my instructor wouldn't let me fly it with the tired ones that it had. We took the hydrasorb units out and went to a friends shop...he took us into a room with a huge vise and told us how to change them then left, said he didn't want to see either of us kill ourselves. We made out ok but there was some tense moments. You can take a thick piece of pipe that will fit over the retainer disks. Cut a slice into it about a 1/2" then cut one side out of the tube were you have a lip sticking out. This will hold the pipe in place when you start pulling upwards to slide the bungie over the retainer disk. USE BABY POWDER so it will want to slide instead of rolling. Also make sure that it can't come loose from whatever you have it mounted in, these things have and will hurt people. It will take two people and the longer the pipe the better...to a point. Oh something else make sure all the edges and the face of the tube were the bungie will slide is smooth, polished would be better and rounded corners. I have two upcoming PA 20/22 projects and will buy the tool, have always borrowed one from a friend before but he loaned it out and forgot who had it and it's never come back home... The bottom line is please be careful.
