Have always been taught to drop the gear at the final approach point where
the final decent begins for a landing. Dropping the gear helps to set up
the final decent rate for landing. Depending on the aircraft, a final power
adjustment is not needed.

thanks for all the responses.
FYI, I agree with dropping the gear at GS intercept of FAF.
I'm not sure where/why these people are learning the other way I described.
I still don't see any advantage to doing it their way either.
Oh well, I shall continue to teach my way.
Thanks,
Brian

Please don't forget that controller requests and the size of the airport do make
a difference.
If you have to slow down to drop the gear it's pretty offensive to a jet behind
you. The runway is probably long enough to support a safe delay in dropping gear
in order to honor a request to "keep your speed up". Safety first but. . .

Hi Guys
I have a Piper Lance, I was taught to fly the procedure at 21 inches of
manifold pressure, 2400 rpm at one notch of flaps puts you at 120 knots. When I
intercept glide slope, I drop the gear and the plane follows the glide slope
down with very minor adjust to throttle.
