There is a carrier in the ocean just 3 miles off shore and only 5 miles from my
home airport. Our newspaper reported that it is not in service as it is undergoing
some maintenance at sea. I want to do a "touch and go" on the carrier and
wondered if there are any military personnel out there who may know the dimensions
of the deck/landing area. Really, I would like to do a full stop, but
I don't know if my Pitts will be able to lift off such a short runway. Also,
I am afraid that actually stopping on the carrier may be illegal or get me in
some sort of trouble.
Any advice?

Hello Bob,
I'm sorry that I can't offer any information about the carrier. However,
I'm sure you've already thought about the arresting wires and other possible
obstacles? Regardless, if you do proceed, please document heavily for some
rather entertaining web site images/videos?
Bon voyage --

Unfortunately Bob, you would not be the first to do such a feat. You better think
of something else.
Go back into the 50's or 60's of sport aviation and you will find this was actually
done with a Smith Miniplane I think, It may have been something else. The
name of the plane was "Wind Song" and it landed with pre-arranged permission.
There were no problems..
Anyone remember the issue of Sport Aviation on this one?

Yep!!it was on the USS F.D. Roosevelt. The pilot was Lt Tim Grier and the CO
of the ship allowed it with COMNAVAIRLANT permission. It was hoisted aboard
in Norfolk Va. and flown off as we got closer to NS Mayport Fl.All cross
deck pendants were removed as the 500x5 wheels wpold not get over them even
laying flat on deck.On our deployment to the MED soon after Tim and I
started a PJ-260 each.I made the flat sheet pieces and ribs.I lost track of
Tim after we returned to the Conus.I was the Carrier Airwing fighter a/c LSO
flying F-8U-2NE CRUSADERS with VF-11,the oldest fighter sqdn in the USN.
