The original builder/owner of my plane did not fit the thermostat but instead installed in-flight adjustable louvers on the starboard radiator, so that temperatures can be adjusted by the pilot. I have retained this feature with the new engine - it provides improved maximum cooling (no thermostat to reduce coolant flow) and may also reduce the risk of cold seizure (radiators are always live so there is no risk of a slug of ice cold water entering the engine from cold rads if the thermostat were to open suddenly). Whilst I was installing the new engine I also fitted coolant powered carb heaters, and replaced the coolant overflow bottle with a car pressurized expansion chamber. Since doing this my coolant system has remained totally free of any air bubbles (25 hours). -------- BobP Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=406928#406928 ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 02:59:39 PM PST US From: George Gennuso Subject: Re: Pulsar-List: Re: 582 blue head upgrade question Bob, what do the louvers look like and how are they adjusted?=0A-=0AThank s=0AGeorge=0A =0A=0A________________________________=0A From: BobP =0ATo: pulsar-list@matronics.com =0ASent: Saturday, August 1 7, 2013 1:49 PM=0ASubject: Pulsar-List: Re: 582 blue head upgrade question >=0A=0AI converted my new blue top to grey top mode when I fitted it by bla nking off the two ports where the bi-pass hose would normally fit. =0A=0ATh e original builder/owner of my plane did not fit the thermostat but instead installed in-flight adjustable louvers on the starboard radiator, so that temperatures can be- adjusted by the pilot.
