I have delayed installing my tank (header tank for 582 Rotax), because I am trying to find an alternative to the sight tube gas gauge as I feel it isn't a good design. I am looking to place a Fuel Sending unit centered in the upper section of the back gas tank panel. There are so many different types available but I feel I will need either a mechanical float type of capacitance type. I know I will have to mount it horizontally in the back and most probably have to bend the capacitor in order to get an accurate reading. Could someone impart some wisdom my way so I can determine what will be the most acceptable way of installing this system? Should I install a fuel pump? My original thinking says I do not need to but it never hurts to ask. I would also like to install a gas-collator or some other device to check for water and debris in the fuel tank. In short, I feel I need to sump the fuel before each flight. Any and all words of wisdom, advice, or ideas will certainly be valued and most appreciated! Sincerely and Respectfully, Clyde -------- J.M. The capacitive fuel sender works, but the fuel flow monitor is extremely ac curate as long as you update the gauge, when you top off the fuel tank.=C2 - I have calibrated the capacitive sender multiple times, and then later, half a tank can read half other times closer to 3/4. Having previously owned commercially built aircraft, I am one to believe th ere is a good reason they have gas-collators and auxiliary fuel pumps.=C2 - For experimental aircraft, these items are not that expensive for the p eace of mind. Debris does occasionally show up at preflight sumping the fue l and mechanical fuel pumps can stop working (I did have this happen).
