Simply place a radiator clamp (or muffler clamp) around the gear leg as low as you can get it, and turn it so the bolt portion is on the bottom. This gives a very good protrusion (and at the right angle) to slip a small floor jack under, and it lifts just as Tom's modification does. To make sure it didn't slip, I placed two clamps one above the other, and it has worked well for two years. At the rate I was going thru tires and brakes (another story) before the shims, this system was exercised quite often.
