I think the guys out there are buiding quick build kits and they just do not
encounter those type of problems anymore.

        Tom--

Either you got to get out to Florida or I have to get back to CA (used
to live in San Diego--spent a bunch of time camping in Joshua Tree and
there abouts). We need to do some serious single-file tail-chasing.

Now, I know that some of the Listers might not think that this is
RV/Rocket-related, but every aviator, eventually, has to do some
formation work--and, one, of the best places to start is to follow
someone and "mirror" his/her moves--the only thing you're looking at is
the other plane--you can't get distracted--if you do, you'll probably be
in the papers the next morning (the AF Thunderbirds did just the
opposite in the early 80's when they all followed their lead into ground
during a low-level loop out at Nellis--and, I know that in this instance
it could be construed as a bad joke--but, that's why you should fly
Navy--sorry, Tom--tho, when the Blue and Gold was flying Phantoms and
hanging out till four in the morning at Trader John's (Pensacola), they
didn't exactly distinguish themselves with their safety record--wheels
up landing--no problem--canopy first landing when inverted, hey!--no
problemo). Anyway, as I've said before, everytime we flew xcountry in
our Navy planes we always tried to overnight at AF bases and everytime
we flew in to an AF base it was usually bumpy, overcast, raining,
whatever, and we were already 4-5 feet of each others' wing and the
Skipper would chime in--"let's tighten it up boys, gotta look good in
the break"--but, the Skipper spent 6 yrs at the Hanoi Hilton (A-7
Corsair) and he could fly dead-on IFR when he was asleep and make 0/0
landings where you couldn't even hear the tires chirp, so, we usually
cut him some slack! Oh, man, I miss those days--remember, when they
used to have strippers in "back room" at the Nellis O'Club? Dropping
jellied gasoline on innocent civilians--oh, well, I digress? You were a
Weasel so they didn't make you do that stuff--you just had to go in
first and light up all the SAMs so we could tell where they were--not
quite as good as the RA-5 Vigilante, who had to *follow* everybody to
take the photos and every human being in SE Asia was lying on their
backs firing their rifles in the air when the Vigi's came over--the Vigi
pilots where the most nervous people on Earth, because they knew that
everybody was trying to kill them, and they, of course, were right, but
there was nothing they could do about it--they had to follow the
original bomb run track--and, like clockwork, their orders were to do it
20-30" after the bomb run. Oh, and you spent some time in that dessert
(sic) place (1991), shooting camels, of course, you never hit any--

Anyway, back to Rockets--a good friend of mine was just getting ready
for the final DAR inspection on his -4 (most of his hours are in gliders
and he also spends part of his Michigan summers in an L-19 (?) tug
pulling other glider pilots up) and we went down the beach and Gulf
Coast from Venice to the Everglades at 10' above the mangroves, and I
couldn't get they guy to shut-up--he was hoopin' and hollerin'--of
course, when we landed, he told me he was trying to get out of the
airplane (just joking). But, I had a low-level route set-up between
Venice and Arcadia (to the East--they have a big, honkin' rodeo there,
every summer)--it's a little circuitous and about 90 nm, but does not
overfly any houses, structures, towers, assemblies of persons, etc and
he would fly low-level formation with me, usually in trail, and there
are certain sections where the briefing mandates that you"slalom"
between certain pine trees. (I don't think the average prop pilots
understand the angle-of-bank/high-g turns that glider pilots are used to
to stay in a thermal or in a lift--and, a good glider pilot is gonna wip
our butt, esp. if you get a little slow). You have to be carefull about
flying low over salt water, too--it can take you 2-3 hrs to clean your
airframe off after a 20' hop--and woe-be-me with my polished aluminum
      prop and spinner.

OK, I realize you guys don't really care about my mental meanderings,
but, hey, sometimes you just have to talk.

      Boyd.
