--> Rocket-List message posted by: "Tom Gummo" <t.gummo@verizon.net> Everybody, APV is having a Air Fair Sunday June 8th, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. $5 a person or $10 a car load, free for those who fly in. Static displays include: C-46 China Doll F8F Bearcat SNJ (T-6) B-25 An-2 Colt (Big Russian Biplane) Casa ____ (Spanish Jet Trainer, sorry but I can't begin to spell the name) T-34 T-28 and A-1 Skyraider (are on the fence) Aerial displays: Acro Demo by "Nash" , I think he is number one ranked in the US. 5 Juga Jets - Formation display, non-acro 3 Pitts Biplanes - Formation display, non-acro Unscheduled but possible THE FAMOUS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA VAN's RV AIR FORCE. (The FAA will be here so be prepared to show your paperwork as the airspace has been waivered for ONE ten minute Acro display.) Two FAA inspectors will be on hand to inspect the ONE acro pilot. Marine Helicopters who just happen to be passing by on the way home from a exercise. Rides in the Bushmaster (Ford Trimotor clone) are available. The air show part will be very small but there should be lots of food. So, if you are looking for someplace to go Sunday for the hundred dollar hamburger, try APV. I will be the "AirBoss" on the Unicom freq 122.8. So, give me a call as you get into the local area for current activities. If we have an aerial event in progress, I might have to ask you to hold outside the airspace for a couple of minutes. There is only one event scheduled each half hour so there should be plenty of time for arrivals and departures. Also, for departing, I will be asking you to help schedule your leaving around the "show". The weather the last couple of days has been very warm to HOT. So bring a hat and sunscreen, etc, Hope to see you there. Come and have a good time. Tom "GummiBear" Gummo AirBoss for Apple Valley Air Fair and All Around Nice Guy Please do not archive

There will be "People Choice" awards for the cars, airplanes etc. The local fire dept. will have a "SLAM" display, crashed cars, fire, CHP, police responce and a Mercy helo airlift. It's going to be a great day. NO land, parking or entry fee for fly-ins. I'm going to be on airplane parking duty at 122.8. KABONG. Sure you can fill the crankcase with oil if you want to. Kinda messy when it runs out of all the holes you forgot to plug though. And it doesn't necessarily remove the moisture!!!!! Here's what I suggest... YMMV. Put fresh oil in the engine or just drain all of it out. Take out all of the spark plugs, actually all of the engine openings should be open for best results. Get a couple giant garbage bags or make the equivalent from plastic sheeting and duct tape. Put the engine in carefully so as not to tear the bag. Toss in several bags of drierite (see the website). Seal the bag. Monitor the indicator every few weeks and rejunvenate the drierite as needed by baking it in a oven as shown below. The drierite will turn from blue to pink as it absorbs water. Water can only come from the engine or a leak in the bag. You should reach a point where the drierite stays blue indefinietly. When it does your engine is bone dry. http://www.drierite.com/catalog3/page16.cfm If you do this right, I GUARANTEE that your engine will stay absolutely dry. Period! And it's really quite easy to do. Vince Frazier 1946 Stinson, NC97535, FOR SALE (the world's nicest Stinson... really!) F-1H Rocket, "Shangrila", N540VF reserved, <http://www.usi.edu/science/chemistry/vfrazier/page1.html> ************************************************************************ *************** A Sidebar on Drierite Desiccant The desiccant I've been using is from Drierite, PO Box 460, Xenia, OH 45385, phone: 513-376-2927. Their web site with information on all their desiccants is at www.drierite.com. I'm using "Indicating Drierite" which is Stock # 23005 and size 8 mesh. The composition is 97% calcium sulfate (CASO4) and 3% cobalt chloride (CoCl2). The cobalt chloride is the indicator which is blue when it's dry and absorbent and pink when it's lost its water absorbing ability. The spent Drierite desiccant can be regenerated by spreading it in 1/4- 1/2" layers in several glass baking dishes and baking in a kitchen convection oven for 2-4 hours. Occasionally open the oven door to release moisture vapor and stir the desiccant in the pans. The desiccant should turn blue as the water is released. The instructions from Drierite on their web site are slightly different... "the granules may be spread in layers one granule deep and heated for 1 hour at 210 C or 425 F. The regenerated material should be placed in the the original glass or metal container and sealed while hot." Spreading the Drierite "one granule deep" isn't very practical. My way around this was to layer it thicker, mix occasionally with a wooden spoon, and cook it longer. It seems to work. The Drierite may turn blue though before it is fully regenerated. Make sure you cook it long enough! Let the pans and Drierite cool enough so the now active desiccant can be safely "poured" from the pans into a glass container. Apparently the glass container the Drierite comes in is made of borosilicate ("Pyrex") because I haven't had one break from the heat yet. Try not to make a mess! You'll need a large funnel with a large hole. Making a funnel out of letter size paper will do in a pinch. After a couple of times through this process, the colors becomes more pale and the ability to distinguish between light blue and pale pink becomes more difficult. It's always a good idea to label desiccant as "good" and "bad" or "wet" and "dry" so that when you pick up a bottle, you don't have to guess about its state of hydration ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 09:32:46 AM PST US From: Morocketman@aol.com Subject: Re: Rocket-List: Harmon Rocket special on TV Satellite Channel 232 --> Rocket-List message posted by: Morocketman@aol.com Thanks for the heads up on the Harmon Rocket Special on Fine TV Channel 232 on my satellite.
